THE CITY HALL.
The Ilatiner has received a number of
lommnnicatior.s endorsing the proposi
tion to erect a new city hall in Athens
it a cost of $50 000 which we hope to
had room for publication a little later.
We find that the people of the city are
almost unanimously in favor of the plan
outlined by the special committee of
council which reported at the called
meeting last Satnrday, and for this rea
son The Banner cannot afford to crowd
ont local news matter for the publica-
, .on of *these communications at this
time. We trust however, that the peo
ple of the city will continue to express
themselves, in puvato conversation, as
they have in these communications on
the proposition to erect the new city
ball, and we w .'l add that these com
mnnkutions are moat gratifying to the
management of The Banner, in view of
the fact that this paper has been work
ing on this movemr nt steadily for the
past few months. The indications an
that very few votes indeer will be polled
in the election next month against thi
bonds for the new city hall.

And now they aro trying to ohange

The cry against the early bird variety
has not been raised, however.
The regular session of the State Ncr
mal School opened yesterday with an
atttendvnce of nearly four hnndreo
Georgia men and women, Bud it will bt
gratifying to the people of Athens and
the people of Georgia who have an in
terest in the great educational move
ment that is now sweeping over the en
tire South, ■ to know that a majority oi
those registered at the Normal Sthiol
will be here for ten months instead ot
ten weeks as formerly. In addition ti
this a large number of them will be eu
abled by the scholarship plan that ha>
been so successfully worked by those in
tereated in the work of the Norma
School, to take the ten months’ oours,
at a total cost to each student of onl
$10.00, which includes tuition, board
laundry, bxiks, drugs, the free nse o'
the library and other necessaries, witi •
out the addition of a penny in the way ol
fees. In fact there are no fees chargee
at the State Normal School The stu
dents of this noble institntion aro no<
burdened with this expense os they or
al many other institutions seeking to ac
complish the same results being ac
complished by the State Normal School
The people of Athens will extend t
hearty welcome to the noble men am.
women who are now in session at th-
Normal School. We will do all in on
power to make their stay in this citj
no’ only profitable, bat pleasant. We ar
fortunate in having this grand institn
tiou located within onr midst, and the
people of Athens appreciate this fact
very sincerely. The Banner extendi
congratulations to the faculty of thi
Normal School on the splendid showing
made on the opening day, and to the no
ble men and women throughout thi
country, who’ by their liberaliey, havi
made it possible for a large per cant, ol
the student body to enjoy the benefits oi
this institntion at snch a modest ccst to
thomselves.
Only about 400 of of the one thousand
who are expected to come to Athens oan
be cared for by the dormitories of the
educational institutions of Athens. The
remaining six hundred will have to be
boarded outside the dormitories, which
will mean a great deal to the boarding
houses and hotels of Athens, as well as
many private families, who will be com
pelled to throw the doors of their homes
open to boarders daring the period of
the summer school. To fail to put up
the necessary money for the establish
ment of the summer school in Athens
by the business mer. of this oity would
be standing in our own light, from a
commercial standpoint. We must have
the summer school, and as we have
said, The Banner stands ready, not only
to do all the advertising that can be
done by this paper, free of charge, but
to a d the movement in a more substan
tial way. Lit the business men think
iver this matter.

The Banner finds that a large major
ity of the people are in favor of the new
city hall. It wonld be a bad state of
affairs if this was not the case.
THE SUMMER SCHOOL.
If Mr. Woodward remains in the race
to the finish no other candidate will
have a walk over for Mayor of Atlanta.
This is the way it looks to The Banner.
The election for bonds for the new
oity hall will probably be one election
on whioh there will be no betting. It
appear! that the people are all in favor
of the bonds.
Nearly four hundred Georgia men
and women are in attendance on the
present session of the State Normal
School. This is one of the noblest in-
stltntions in the state.
The merchants of Athens are Show-
In* a commendable spirit in the matter
of supply iog funds for the summer
school. This will be a great thing for
Athens and we ahonld not let op on it
on til it is assured.
What wonld it be worth to the peo
ple of Athena to have one thousand
strangers in this oity for six weeks
during next summer, the very dullest
season of the year? This is the qaee
Mon to be decided i ing on the
summer school.
The Athens Summer School is now
being mapped ont by members of the
faculties of the University of Georgia
and the State Normal School, and with
the assistance of the business men ol
Athens and others who have the inter
ests of the city at heart, this movement
will result in a glorious success.
The plan, as outlined by The Banner
some days ago. is to secure subscriptions
from the people of Athens in the amount
of $3,000, to which will be added a sim
nlar amount to be secured from another
source. This will insure the success of
the movement. It will inBnre the pres
ence of one thousand Georgia men and
women in Athens for six weeks next
summer and eacn summer thereafter
and will make Athens lively daring
what is now the dullest season of the
year, in all sections of the country. It
will not only be a great thing lor the
Georgia teachers, who have heretofore
been compelled to go beyond the bordt
of the great state of Georgia in order to
get the benefits of the snmmer schools,
but it will be a great thing for Athens
in the way of advertlting, In addition
to thia it will be a great thing to the
business men of Athena individually,
thia large number of men and women
will undoubtedly spend a goodly sum of
money with the basineas men of the
oity.

YOUNG LADY’S LIFE SAVED
At Panama, Columbia, by Cbamberlan’s Colic,
Cholera and Dlarrhocca Remedy,
Dr. Chas. H Utter, a prominent phys
ician, of Panama, Colombia, in a recent
letter states: "Last Maroh I had as
a patient a young lady sixteen years of
age, who had a very bad attack of dys
entery. Everything I prescribed for
her proved ineffectual and she was grow
ing wore every honr Her parents were
sore she wonld die. She had become so
weak that she coaid not tarn over in
bed. What to do at this critical mo
ment was a slndy for me, bat I thought
of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Di
arrhoe i Remedy and as a last resort pre
scribed it, The most wonderful result
was effected. Within eight hoars she
was feeling mnoh better; inside of three
days she was upon her feet and at the
end of one week was entirely well.”
