But Money Is Attached by Alabama
For Allege 1 Shortage.
Philadelphia. Pa., Aug. 19.—Through
the death in Philadelphia last spring
of Commodore Thomas Corbin, of the
United States navy, who left an es
tate valued at nearly $1 OOO.OOO. the life
story of Francis C. Randolph, lawyer,
Judge, alleged absconder and mur.
derer, and now an officer of the army
of Colombia, has just become public.
Part of Commodore Corbin’s estate
is inherited by Randolph, who is a
nephew, under the interstate laws, but
his share, estimated at $50,000, has
•en attached by Attorney General
Charles L. Rrown, of Alabama, on be
half of that state. The Alabama of
fleial charges that Randolph defraud
od the commonwealth of $25,000.
Randolph was elected probate judge
of Montgomery, Ala., in 1880, and re-
looted in 1892. Three years laUr
he disappeared. Investigation show
that $25,000 in liquor license fees c
looted for the city of Montgomery went
with him.
Detectives finally found him In Co
lombia, but could not retake him, a.
he had been sentenced to be hanged
for a murder committed during a
rawl. Through the efforts of influ
ential friends in tills country, nota
bly Hillary A. Herbert, of Alabama
the then secretary of the navy, tin
sentence was commuted to 15 years
imprisonment. Attorney General
Rrown has now learned that Randolph
is at liberty and is captain of scout?
in the Colombian army. The attor
ney general came here and througl
local lawyers secured a foreign it
tachment from the common pleas eour
$r*o,ooo. The estate is held by a lc;
cal trust.
Salplglossis is a pretty, showy an
mini, easy to raise and worthy a place
the garden.
The birch grows farther north than
any other tree. Next comes the Si
berian larch and then the fir.
The dark spot in the center of a bean
blossom is the nearest approach to
black that occurs in any flower.
Sunflowers may be transplanted quite
sily if the work is done on a rainy
day or In the cool of the evening.
Preserve n green lawn in the center
of the garden, however small. This is
needed to set off the dowers and for
purposes of relief.
Mignonette Is so unobtrusive that its
presence is often betrayed by its sweet
scent merely, but a large bed of mi
gnonette should be in every garden.
Dissolve fresh lime in water, allow
sediment to settle and saturate earth
In which small, white worms have
been noticed with the clear solution
thus made.
That “it is never too late to set out
roses” is a true word about gardening.
But “the earlier the better, so long as
the frost is out of the ground," is a
maxim no less worthy of dependence.

the Gates faction at the annual meet
Ing of tho stockholders tomorrow
Gates asks the court to order that
a chairman be selected by a majority
of voters, claiming that the Osgood
faction has planned the rejection of
the votes supporting him. The gist
of the claim of the Osgood factlo:

"Sixty thousand bona fide votes held
by Chairman Osgood and his friends
represent the majority of the real
holders of Fuel and Iron stock,

What puzzles tho police is tho fa<

The man was about 35 years old. 5

Jewels, candy, (lowers, man—that is
the order of a woman’s preference.
Jewels form a magnet of mighty power
to the average woman. Even that
greatest of all jewels, health, ia often
rained in the sternaous efforts to make
or save the money to purchase them. If
a woman will risk her health to get a
coveted gem, then let her fortify herself
against the insiduous consequences of

by the regular use of Dr. Boschee’s Ger
