Cars in AtL.nta.
Atlanta. Aug. 29.—More than $30,-
000 worth of goods have been stolen
In the past 6even months from the box
cars of the Southern, Atlanta and West
Point. Central and Bell. Line railways
in and around Atlanta. This charge
1s made by Detectives Kilpatrick, Lan-
ford and Steint of the Atlanta force,
and Private Detoctives Scarlett and
Connally, of tho Southern railway.
The detectives say tiat it is one of
the best planned and moat thorough
ly executed schemes ol railroad thiev-
ing ever known in the south, and that
several Atlanta merchants are impli
cated, and that they have the proof
in hand to convict.
It is alleged that during the past
seven months the ’’lifting” has been
carried on with a systematic thor
oughness that would have done cred
it to the very best business organiza
tion or coropoiation anywhere in tho
United States, and that goods of all
kinds have been stolen.
The thieves, it is thought by the de
tectives, have been operating during
the past seven months, but the first
inkling of it got to the ears of the d>
tectivee about four months ago, and
during this time they havo been en a
still but effective him. for the daring
and eminently successful “lifters.”
According to the detectives the plan
has been executed in this way: No-
groes paid to do tho work would be
notified that a freight car of a certain
line, and bearing a certain number,
would reach the city on or about a
certain day. These negroes would
watch for the car and when it reached
the city they would await a convenient
time and when the car was on a aide
track would go to it at night, and af
ter cutting the seal It would be merely
a matter of having help and a wagon
conveniently near, and the goods
would be taken out ol the car. hauled
to a convenient spot, hidden and then
sold at leisure.
The sensational feature of the thtev.
ing is the charge that '(ome of the mer
chants of Atlanta are in league with
the thieves, and, in fact, have the
negroes to do the woik and pay them
by giving them a nominal price for
the goods. No nanus are aa yet di
vulged.

Falla SO Feet Into 9ubway—Chauffeur
Fatally Injured.
New York, Aug. 29.—A heavy pub
lic automobile fell Into the Rapid
Transit subway in Broadway, between
Forty-third and Forty-fourth streets,
falling 80 feet and flinging the chauf

Morris was internally injured and will
die.
In the presence of nearly 3,000 poo-
plo the chauffeur was lifted out ol
the subway on a hoisting platform
ami then taken in an ambulance to n
hospital. Some witnesses said that
a Broadway car crashed into tho auto
mobile and Jammed It into the sub
way.
Morris was driving along Broadway
when ho saw the car bound north
ward. He tried to swing out of Its
way, but as the machine crossed the
track the rear wheels slid on tho ralis.
Morris gas now alongside tho sub
way. and the machino careened, then
tilted and went over with a crash
into the darkness below. Hundreds
of persons from the theaters and di
ners in several restaurants gathered
about tho trench.
Workingmen In the tunnel at Forty-
second street ran np tho subway and
found the wrecked automobile first
and then saw Morris in agony 30 foot i
away. Four workmen carried him to |
Forty-second street and ho was hoist- j
es to the street level. n>- this time ,
nearly 3,000 people, men and women. ]
had gatherod about the trench. They I
leaned against the railings with such ■
force that tho timbers cracked. The j
