Columbus Will Now Operate Its Own Waterworks. Columbus. Ga.. December 5.—Colum bus is happy over the result of the elec tion for water bonds. The people voted almost unanimously for the Issu ance of $250,000 of 4 per cent bonds, with which the city Is to build a first- class system of water works. The vote was as follows: For the bonds. 1.G40; against the bonds. 7. Majority for bonds. 1,638. Of the seven who voted against bonds, six wqre whites. Two hundred and ninety-tw*) negroes voted, out of a i«glstratlon of 322. To carry the election 66 2-3' per cent of the registered vote was required Ninety four per cent of the vote was cast for bonds. The registration was 1.766. The election was on® of the s most remarkable In the clfy of Columbus the people "getting together” as*never before upon a local issue. This was the third water works’ bond election in the history of the city. In the previous elections bitter fiuhts were waged and the bonds.were defeated. Men With Lrawn Revolvers Maked Make Clean Sweep. Pocatello. Idaho. Doc. 5.—Three masked men entered the Eagle club moms last night and. robbed the place of about $1,000. Two of the men advanced with drawn revolvers into the room In which there were not less than 35 «nen. The third man then marched Around the games and gathered up the money. The robbers fired a 'volley In to the ceiling before they departed. The police are on their trail. In New York City Elevated Lines Are Seriously Interrupted—Gothamites Experiencing First Roal Incon venience of Winter. New York, Dec. 5.—A snow and sleet storm delayed traffic in New York to day. Service on the elevated lines was seriously interfered with and com munication between uptown and down town by means of tne surface lint's was very slow and difficult. Dispatch from all parts of this state show that the storm Is prevailing everywhere with varying severity. At Alt any the snowfall Is very heavy and all trains are reported fiom one to five hours late. Blizzard condi tions prevail at Schenectady. New burgh, Saratoga and other places ; n the east and north part of the state. From Rochester to Buffalo the storm Is much milder. In this city the storm developed into a blizzard as the day grew. About an Inch of snow fell during the forenoon. Sound steamers arrived several hours late, and their officers reix>rted the storm very heavy up the sound. Telegraphic service east of New York to New England, especially, is prostrated, and northward through New York state the service is greatly impeded hy the wind and snow. The White Star liner Teutonic, which reached her dock today complet ed a trip of seven days and thirteen hours in almost continuous storms. The ship met particularly severe weather | last night approaching port, and an chored In the lower bay. The last bit of the voyage up to the dock today was made in a blizzard. Every day of the trip the passengers were kept within storm doors and one of the crew was nearly washed overboard Toward noon the storm abated but the wind continued high. Unexpected Turn In Cuban Negotia tions at Havana. Washington, Dec. 8 —The unexpect ed turn in the Cuban negotiations at Havana have naturally surprised the officials here who had every reason to believe from Minister Souiers’ re port that the treaty was practically an eeomplished fact. Now that It is to be thrown Into the house of representatives at Ha vana. with a Nationalist majority sup. posed to he hostile to the establish ment of closer relations with the Unit ed States, it Is feared that the treaty is almost certain to be amended so ty and Stock, but No Loss of Life Yet—Government Sends Snagroat to Assist If Needed, Shreveport, La., Dec. 6.—The situa tion in the Red River valley shows no Improvement today. The wutc r Is within a few Inches of the danger line, and Is rising rapidly. A rise of 4 feet more is predicted in the upper valley. Lands are submerged on both sides of the stream, and there has been great damage to property and stock. No loss of human life has been reported. The government snagboat Howell is expected here today to assist In re lieving the distress If any calls for assistance Is made. The crevasse In the levee nort i of here has not been fully repaired and 12 miles of bottom lands have been inundated. Stillwater, Minn., Visited by $175,000 Conflagration. Stillwater, Minn., Dec. 5.—Fire that broke out under the stage in the Grand opera house caused a loss of $175,000. The opera house block was totally destroyed, with a loss of $75,000 ami insurance of $21,000. Adjoining property was damaged. Other losses are S. M. Nolan, grocer, loss $15,000; Holcomb block, $10,- 000; Dische block, $10,000; Zelglor Bros., clothing. $40,000, stock badly damaged by smoke and water; C. K. Kirk & Co., shoes, stock $12,000. badly damaged. There were also a number of smaller losses. The St. Paul Are d partment sent apparatus, but It arrived too late. FINE RESIDENCE DAMAGED. Bellain, secretary and assistant to his brother, Bishop Tikhon, the head of the Rus sian church on this coast, has been found dead in bed. Death was caused by paralysis of the heart. Bishop Tik hon is now in Now York. Fire Breaks Out—Maidservants Have Narrow Escapes. Chicago, Dec. 5.—Franklin Mac Veagh’s palatial residence at 103 Lake Shore drive was damaged $10,000 by fire early this morning. Two maid servants Jumped from a second story window, sustaining serious injuries, and several others, who narrowly es raped suffocation. were rescued tv firemen. Only a small portion of thj residence burned, the chief danger to occupants being from suffocation from the dense smoke that filled every por tion of the structure. Mr. McVeagh and family were unin jured. An over heated furnace was the cause of the fire. FIREMEN ARE CAUGHT IN FAUJNG DEBRIS Wall Tumbles as They Were Fighting Flames. ONE KILLED, SEVERAL INJURED. Rockford, Ills., Has $275,000 Fire. Rockford, Ill., Dec. 5.—The Mead building, a 5-story brick structure, was destroyed by fire last night. It was occupied by the Wortham Bros. & Co., department store, and the Rock ford business college. The loss .8 $275,000; Insurance $250,000. Accident Occurred at Cleveland, O., During Efforts of Engine Company No. 14 to Subdue Flames In Likely & Pocket Factory. Cleveland, O.. Dec. 5.—At 4 o’clock this morning while members of the flro department were still fighting the flames In the ruins of the Likely & Rocket factory at the corner of Cass and Hamilton streets, a portion of the wall fell In upon members of Engine company No. 14, burying them in the debris. Those who were thus caught were Captain Daniel Flnucca and James L. Os burger and Arthur Garner, who were working just outside the wall; Lieu tenant Robert McKenna. Hosoman Sam Jorns, Charles Nioding and Pat rick H. Joyce, who were on the in side. Ambulances were hurriedly called and the firemen soon brought from the ruins, all but Joyce, who iB still deep under piles of brick with no hope of him being taken out alive. The injuries of McKonua, Jones and Nledlng are serious, while the others are slightly injured. Later the dead body of Joyce was reoovered. Hs had been crushed to death beneath many tons of brick and mortar and heavy machinery. Ths other firemen will recover. OA.S r rOHIA. San Francisco, Dec. 5.—Investigation Into the causes which led to the explo sion of the steamer Progresso at the Fulton Iron Works Wednesday by which 13 men are supposed to have lost their lives and others badly In jured, has shown that the quality of the oil which exploded on the steam er was poor. Students Fight Flames to Save Dick- I neon Hall. Princeton, N. J., Doc. 6.—Dickinson bell, the big recitation building of the academic department of the university, narrowly escaped being burned to the ground today. Fire broke out in the third story be tween the hallway and examination hall at 10 o’clock, while Professor J. Mark Baldwin's junior class in psy chology was In session. A bucket bri gade was formed by the students and the local fire department was summon ed. After a hard fight the blaze was smothered before it reached the main part of the examination hell. It is thought that some one dropped a lighted cigarette in the hallway and the woodwork took Era. The loss <3 18.000.
