anyone else, was to stop a.ml kick at
every cur that snapped at his. heels
lie would do nothing but kick.
There are sixty public rcbocls in
Sumter county outside the city
Americas, and all are reported in a
flourishing condition, Tho public
school teachers of the county
paid their salaries for tho fourth
quarter of 1896 last Saturday, aggre¬
gating $3,000.
A dispatch to tho Baltimore Sun
states that Mr. Justice Field of Cali¬
fornia will, soon after tho {inaugura¬
tion of Major McKinley, resign hi-
seat on tlio bench of tho supremo
court, and that Judge Goff of \V est
atfirgTnia, who. it is said, has positive-
declined a cabinet portfolio, will
8fcppointea j„ bis stead.
The rUvoat-Ifease iWo will « <,.i
at- least $5,000. The State -> !«f
asked to pay the bill, and no doubt
will do so. Will the time over
when our lawmakers will help
overtaxed people save money instead
of spending largo sums for such fool

A PROPOSITION to employ convicts
in road making is being urged
many sections, and is likely to come
le r oretl elegi.-laturosof many States
before long. It will havo to be taken
up and considered soon, for the ai-
guinents on the subject are by no
means all on one side. There are
some strong reasons in favor of the
project. It would make the prison¬
ers useful, diminishing the cost the of
•maintaining them—or decrease
road taxes, which amounts to the
same thing—and with this cheap
labor, whose tiino is valulcss, the
roads could be worked until they
were put in perfect condition, it
"giEing would bo good wholesome for the prisoners, exercise too, and
them
keeping them too each busy to plot mis
rtbeif or teach other new i as
calities.—Philadelphia Ledger. The
Monitor would be glad to soo (’aK
houn county accept the above pro¬
position, and we believe we voice the
sentiment of the majority of her citi
ecus, and also adott tho “ no-fence"
law. It is fairly f. Stanly iuiated that the
farmers of the pay $20,000
annually for/jneiug to shut out about
$2,000 worth of stock. Of coarse the
colored people and others who do not
own laud think it would be an impo¬
sition put upon them by the wealthy
to abolish the fenco custom, but it
would not. Reuters could very easily
make arrangements with their land
lords for land enough on which to
keep their stock. And then by keep
ir.g up and properly caring for the
stock the quality of hogs and cows
would be a great deal more profitable
than the present quantity, This
paper will always work for the bene¬
fit of the farmer of all classes, and
we honestly believe that “no fenco’’
and good roads is of groat interest
to them. Of course people who
shouldwish to do so could keep up
their fencing.
A PArislftn Discovery.
All-Paris just uow, according to Tho
Journal, is flocking to 88 Rue Bnvi-
guau, Montmartre, whore, a few days
ago, a most remarkable discovery was
made. In this neighborhood nro the
mins of the ancient monastery of the
Benedictines and other old buildings
used by the brothers, most of which nro
also giving way to tho ravages of time.
At 88 Rue Ravignan Mine. Berthelot
keeps a grocery store. She sleeps in 11
small chamber in the rear, that at ono
time wus probably used as au oratory.
Mine. Berthelot, noticing that, tbo tiles
on tho floor of the chamber gave forth a
hollow sound as she stepped upon them,
and thinking that a cellar there would
he very convenient for her business, sent
for a mason and had the tiles removed.
A flight of stone steps was revealed,
leading into a labyrinth of passages.
The authorities havo now taken posses-
sion of the pluoo, and a systematic in-
vestigntiou is being conducted. Many
relics have been found, mid it is believ¬
ed that much light is likely to be
thrown upon the history of Faris dur-
ing the fourteenth century.
Bvlglm»'» Royalty.
The present king of Belgium is L >o-
pold U, who ascended tlio throno Dec.
10, 1865. The kings cf Belgium are
successors of the princes of Grange, the
first being Philibert, who succeeded to
the throne in 1603. For a long time they
were known m studtholders.
Secret*.
“Woman,” said the luucii typewriter board¬

“No,” said the cheerful idiot, “hut
