FIRE' FIRE!
THAT IS ARLINGTON’S LA
TEST MISFORTUNE.
The Little City Is Completely
Ruined, Over One Half of the
Business Houses Burned:
{Reported by T. P. Green.)
Surely the past few days have been
days of pleasure and days of the deepest
regret to me.
Last week I engaged Mr. Claude
Thomas, a good printer, to help the
Monitor to come out on time and allow
me to get out and hustle for the financial
part of the concern.
Saturday I went to Williamsburg to
transact some business and found my
friend Charlie Hudgins in bed sick, and
was compelled to postpone my business.
Sunday, I drove over to Leary, and
there met my acquaintances well and
happy.
Monday, in company with a friend, I
drove over to Arlington to look after a
little business transaction.
l)id you ever look through a kaleido¬
scope? Did you ever notice how quick
the visitudes of life strike us? Today
we are wealthy and enjoying ail the
pleasures and comforts that money can
buy, and tomorrow we are penniless.
Monday Arlington was one of the most
prosperous towns in.the South, and
Tuesday she was in ashes.
We heard the sad news in Morgan
early Tuesday morning, and, in com-
pauy with Sheriff Davis, hurried to the
scene of disaster.
At 4:30 Tuesday morning fire broke
out in McMurray’s restaurant, the ex-
treme north corner store on east side of
Main street. A strong wind was blowing
from the northeast and the fire swept
everything on the east side of the street
down toward the depot except Harri¬
son’s store. Then the fire demon in all
of its fury crossed Main street. Great
sheets of fire would spring high in the
air and lap over the street, and at times
Main street was a perfect arch of fire. I
On the west side of the street Mrs.
Cora A. Ray’s millinery store was the
first to catch fire, and the entire block
was burned with but few exceptions,
The tire fed on the wooden structures in
all of its fury until it reached Cowart’s
brick store. Here it was checked and
skipped over to G. 8. Collius’ large
grocery store and swept every building
from Bostwick & Toole’s double brick
store to the warehouse, thence up to Dr. 1
McLaine’s drug store aud to the corner
dwellibg, known as the Gee place. j
People acquainted with the pretty
little city will understand the territory
burned better than I can describe it
when I give the names of the houses
~
destroyed.
Starting at the corner on the east side
of Main street the restaurant burned
first, then J. F. MeCuller, Y. W. Fudge,
the Courier, Dr. Raney’s dental parlors,
Calhoun & Sander’s drug store, W. D.
Cowdry’s and Stein Bros. On the west
side the entire block burned except
Cowart’s brick store, Nixon & Co., Tay-
lor’s bar and the McLain brick building.
Dr. Miller’s office then caught and the
block was burned to the warehouse,
The only business houses standing in
Arlington today are Cowart’s brick store, I
Nixon & Co., Bostwick & Toole, J. W.
Harrison and Taylor’s saloon. Neither
one of the livery stables were burned or
the warehouse. The stock of goods lost
are tremenduous and those saved are
badly damaged. Cowart Bros, are
heavy loosers; W. D. Cowdry’s loss is
estimated at from ten to twelve thousand
dollars; Mr. G. 8. Collins is about tho
only man that had insurance and his
loss is very heavy; J. S. Pratt lost his
all; Mrs. Layton lost everything; Jeff
McOnllers never saved a dollars’ worth;
Mr. Green Wiseman lost his all, aud
many peoplo of the stricken town are
left almost penniless. The Courier
never saved a single thing, and the sym-
pathy of the Monitor is extended Mr.
Fleming in a true brotherly feeling. He
informed me that the Courier would
rise from the ashes and come out on
time.
This dire calamity to the good people
cf Arlington is deeply regretted by
everybody. It comes so much harder at
this season of the year, owing to the
fact that the merchants had put in heavy
fall stocks and were doing a good busi¬
ness.
NOTES,
Mr. Nixon told mo that lie was still at
the old stand ready for business. Mr.
Taylor said that he was badly disfigured
but still in the ring. Messrs. Bostwick
& Toole aro hard to down and will sell
you goods as cheap as ever.
The people of Arlington display in¬
domitable courage, aud, although terri¬
bly demoralized, will put their shoul¬
ders to tho wheel and soon have the
beautiful little city rebuilt more (sub¬
stantial than evor.
The origin of the fire is not known but
it is supposed to be tho work of an in¬
cendiary.
No lives were lost but several people
got blistered up pretty badly.
The town council met Tuesday night
and passed an ordinance establishing
fire limits and no one will be allowed to
erect any other than a fire proof build¬
ing within the limits, which takes in the
burned district.
Judge J. J, Beck informed me that
the insurance companies represented by
him, sent a readjuster down Wednesday
to pay tip the claims against them.

meeting Wednesday night.

tesian well are brightening every day.
Many a girl loses her good' name by
marrying a man who lias an ugly one.
Persimmons are turning read and soon
good old persimmon beer will be on tap.
Don’t forget to put in a good word for
tho stock law. W’c need it and need it
bad.
Mr, Walter Beck left Tuesday > for
Macon, where he will enter Mercer Uni¬
versity.
Cotton gins are kept in a rush these
days in order to keep up with the de¬
mands.
Heaps of peoplo seem to have forgotten
that a country editor is foolishly fond of
potatoes.
It is hard to tell which keeps up the
most noise in Morgan—the gin whistle
or the jack.
The quail season will soon be on and
then Calhoun county sports will be in
their glory.

acted business in the city today.—Alba-

Rev. It. C. Pool, of Damascus spent
Wednesday with his friend, Dr. J. B.
George. Mr. Pool conducted prayer
service at the Methodist church. He
paid the Monitor a pleasant visit.
Mr. and Mrs. Emmette Kenney, of

about recovered from his receni severe
illness.

Cuba, Mexico and the United States.
Tho Review of Reviews, while pur¬
suing a general line of soberness and
conservatism, occasionally breaks out,
as it were, perhaps just to relieve itself
from the pressure of sitting down upon
itself constantly. In these times of
breaking out it advances positive and
sometimes bold ideas of its own.
We find some of these eruptive propo¬
sitions in its paragraphs on the Cuban
situation, Central America, tho Nicara¬
gua canal and Mexico. It connects these
all together in one scheme bold and in¬
genious, though beforehand the reader
cannot guess how the thing is done. It
is like this:
Let tho United States gently use its
good offices for the freeing of Cuba and
its annexation not to ourselves, but to
Mexico. In return the United States
gets a first class naval and coaling sta¬
tion on tho island. Next let us use our
good offices to get the Central American
states annexed to Mexico likewise.
They are all Spanish, Indian and negro
together. Wo should meantime enter
into a close commercial and defensive
union with Mexico.
Let the United States get by actual
purchase the sole ownership of a strip of
laud on the isthmus and at once construct
through it tho Nicaragua canal, thus
getting in ahead of any of the European
nations with this waterway. Wo must
also obtain advantageous couling sta¬
tions and ports at various points in the
West Indies and on tho Pacific side of
the isthmus. Mexico would back us in
these schemes bccauso wo use our influ¬
ence to do so much for Mexico. Then,
with Hawaii off in the south Pacific
annexed to ns, we rest at our ease and
fear naught from the aggressive and
sometimes sneaking powers of Europe.
