The News, of Gadsden, Ala., lias been
doing a little problem in arithmetic for
the benefit of its advertisers, and, adver¬
tise, and the resnlt is interesting.
“A newspaper,” it says, “lias 5,000
readers for each 1,000 subscribers. A
merchant who puts out 1,000 hand bills
gets posibly 300 or 500 to read them —
that is if the boy who is trusted to
'deliver them does not put them under
the sidewalk. All the women and giv’-s,
and half the men and boys read the
advertisements, Result: The merchant
\vho use the newspaper has 3,500 more
readers to each 1,600 of the band bill
readers. There is no estimating the
amount ’of business that advertising
brings in a merchant, but each dollar in¬
vested brings from 350 to $100 worth o
business.”

commensurate, arranged with a gardner
to let him liave a boquet from time to

Onto day he received a bunch of beauti¬

his fiance. In sure anticipation of a
friendly welcome, he called at the house
of the lady the same evening, and was
not'a little surprised at the frosty recep¬

“You sent, mo a note to— d&y?”
young lady remarked after a pause, in

An ambitious young lawyer paid his
first visit to a country court, not far
from New Orleans, not long siuce. He
went fo represent a big railroad in a suit
brought by a countryman to recover the
value of an ox which departed this life
in a vain attempt to hold up the limited
mail. The question before the court
was one of identification and the coun¬
tryman had testified that he knc-v the ox
by bis color and the flesh marks. Tho
lawyer rose and with dignity said: “If
your honor please, there can be no
question that this witness has sworn

ht recognized by his color. 1 was a
stenographer before I became a lawyer

taken n detailed description of every ox
that passed the hotel, and I am prepared
to swear as an expert that all oxen look
alike to me.” “You are trifling with
the dignity Of this court, sir.” sternly
said the judge, “and I will fine—” “Hold
on judge,” said the clerk, “there liuin’t
been but one yoke of oxen in this town
in a week. Old man Heiily’s beefi a
haulin’ wood and the lawyer’s been
countin’ the same oxen over and over.”
“Judgement for the plaintiff,” Said the
judge, and the lawyer took his depart¬
ure, a sadder but .wiser man.
