OUR LAURELS.
from th- Atlanta Journal.
All honor to the heroes who on
land and sea have brightened every
stripe and added new lustre to every
star of our flag !
Hats off to Dewey and Sampson
and Sehloy, to Shatter and Lawton
and Wheeler and to all the gallant
fellows who with them have illus¬
trated American manhood in this
struggle!
Loving and lasting remembrance
for Bagley and Gibbs and Cnpron
and every one of our soldiers who
has fallen in command or in the
ranks.
Honor Hobson in his Spanish pris¬
on for his deed of appalling danger
and Blue for the determination
which led him to spy out the land of
the enemy with a faith as high as
that which inspired the emissaries
of Israel as they wont down into the
valleys of Canaan.
By two blows our na vy has almost
swept Spain from the seas. On the
slopes and heights of Santiago our
army displayed the firmness of the
Old Guard at Waterloo and the dash
of Pickett’s men at Gettysburg!
Who is not proud to be an Ameri¬
can citizen!
Who is not glad to bo of kin by
blood and nationality witli tho men
who have stood and fought and suf¬
fered and died for our country in
this war?
Who is not happy to live under
the flag that has been carried in
glory to lands upon which its light
had never fallen before and hope to
hearts long sick and almost despair¬
ing under oppression?
The greatness of our country, the
valor and virtue of our race have
grown upon the minds of men by
reason of tho unselfish purpose that
impelled us to this struggle and tho
achievements with which wo have
already enriched its annals.
The love of our own people for
their whole country has been unified
and strengthened and the way to a
higher destiny has been laid open to
this nation.
God grant that we may walk
worthily therein and that with overy
elevation of our name and every in¬
crease of our might may came and
live the spirit, of a truly noble civili¬
zation !

SECOND DISTRICT CONVENTION.
Mon. J. ft. (iriggs Unanimously Re¬
nominated for Congress.
From the Albany Herald.
The Democratic convention of the
Second Congressional district mot in
Albany at noon last Thursday, the
7th inst. Capt. R. Hobbs, chair¬
man of the District, Executive Com¬
mittee, called the convention to or¬
der.
Hon. .Ino. E. Dennison, of Deca¬
tur, was elected permanent chair¬
man of the convention, and upon
taking the chair congratulated the
Democracy of the district upon the
situation, referring in eloquent
words to the fact that the party
was united and that, Hon. James M.
Griggs, our present Congressman,
had been endorsed by the people of
the district.
Mr. W. A. Allen was elected Sec-
rotary.
Upon the call of tho roll of coun¬
ties, all tho counties of the district
except two—Colquitt and Clay—
wore found to be represented.
Upon taking the chair Mr. Donald¬
son congrat ulated the Democracy of
the district upon the situation. He
alluded in happy words to the har¬
mony which characterized the party
at this time, and spoke in eloquent
terms of the able and faithful ser-
vices of our present representative
in Congress, Hon. James M. Griggs,
who had been endorsed by the peo-
plc of tho district for a second term.
The impromptu but eloquent speech
of Mr. Donaldson was enthusiasti¬
cally applauded by tho convention.
Upon motion of Judge Kiddoo, of
Randolph, a committee on resolu¬
tions was appointed. The chair
named the committee as follows :
Messrs. W. D. Kiddoo, of Randolph ;
It. Hobbs, of Dougherty; E. D. Bush,
of Miller; S. A. Roddenberry, of
Thomas, and M. C. Edwards, of
Terrell.
The committee on resolutions re¬
ported the following brief resolution,
which was unanimously adopted:
“Resolved, That wc ratify tho ac¬
tion and platform of the recent
State convention, and reindorse the
Chicago platform of 18!)6.”
Tho next business in order being
the nomination of the Democratic
candidate for Congress, H. M. Mc¬
Intosh placed the name of our pres¬
ent able and faithful representative,
Hon. James M. Griggs, before the
convention. The mention of the
name of Judge Griggs was greeted
with cheers throughout the hall.
There were no other nominations,
and, with one accord, the delegates
rose and Judge Griggs was unani¬
mously nominated.
Messrs. McIntosh and Roddenber¬
ry were appointed to notify Judge
Griggs of his nomination and escort
him into the hall.
J udge Griggs was given a most
enthusiastic reception by the con¬
vention, and, upon being conducted
to the stand, made a brief but stir¬
ring speech of acceptance. He re¬
minded the convention that the is¬
sues which were made in the national
campaign of 1806 were still alivo,
and said tnat the only pledge which
he had to make was that he would
stand firmly by the principles enun¬
ciated in the Chicago platform, and
be faithful to what he honestly con¬
ceived to ho the best interests of the
people whom ho had the honor to
represent.
The district executive committee
for the next two years was chosen
as follows:
Miller—G. W. Cleveland.
Decatur—Jno. E. Donaldson.
Calhoun—J. 1ST. Daniell.
Early—Jno. C. Chancy.
Berrien—J. T. Wilkes.
Terrell—J. A. Laing.
Baker—J. M. Solano.
Quitman—W. A. Hill.
Colquitt--
Clay-
Worth—Daniel Clements.
Mitchell—R. D. Bucli.
Thomas—Jno. Triplett.
Randolph—W. D. Kiddoo.
Dougherty—R. Hobbs.
This completed the regular busi¬
ness of the convention, and in less
than an hour after it had been call¬
ed to order tho convention adjourn¬
ed. It was a Democratic lovefeast
ami perhaps the most harmonious
convention ever held in the district.
After the convention had adjourn
ed the executive committee met
and re-elected Capt. R. Hobbs chair
man.
