McClain, has our community ex¬ perienced such a cloud of sorrow as it did last Saturday afternoon when the sad intelligence of the death of Murrey A. Hightower was received. It w.ts a severe shock to ill, for it came so suddenly and un- expectedly. Only three days his untimely death, he was going ns usual, happily and chorfully, to our school, of which lie had been a her for several years, and where he was always the light and life of both t tachers and schoolmates. He was taken seriously ill last Wednesday morning, with hemorugic fever, and while medical skill was exhausted and loving hands ministered to his wants, yet tney proved of no effect, and at a -.30 o'clock, he fell peacefully to sleep — the long sleep from Which none over wake—and the young anil tender plant was transplanted to its heavenly , father, to grow turn , devel¬ , op in a land fairer than day. Mur- rtiy was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Jno. A. Hightower, one of the most prominent families of our town, and , had , 1 reached , , 1 lus . fifteenth ,, y«ir. He contained every element of sue- cess, and could he have lived to demonstrate his true worth, be would have adorned any community, with till the virtues and graces comprehend true and noble hood. In point of intellect, lie M as as unsurpassed by any boy of bis age ; for his mind was perceptible the most intricate problems, nothing upon which he concentrated bis mind ever failed to be clearly comprehended. 1 The writer knew him , . as a class-mate, . . and . was always , delighted With his vivid explana- tions of ,. everything ,, • that.came ,, . before , him, eternal vigilanco being price , Oi his victories. His friends were numbered by scores, among the white and colored, for all shared alike his generous hospitality. Ho was and charitable, always willing to contribute to the wants of suffering humanity. He was friend to the rich and poor, and many there are who will miss ins deeds of kindness. While ho had his faults as other peo- pie L do, ^ vet there were depicted in lite many admirably trait* of character as can be found in the life of any youth. The Funeral services wore oon- ducted from the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock, by Prof. W. C. Culpepper, his teacher, after which his remains wore inter¬ red at the old family burying grounds, two miles north of Damas- cas. As the shades of the evening appeared, surrounded by sorrowing friends and relatives, the last that was mortal of Murray A. Hightower was consigned to the silent tomb, to await, tin asttmnip. In Ids death the community ,oses one of its brightest jirospects; the father and mother a kind and duti- ful son ; the brothers and sister a loving brother, and the school one of its most intellectual and pupils. Rest, gentle spirit, rest: Hence¬ forth no rude alarms, no enfeebling sickness, no wasting sorrow, no hours of turmoil and strife, for we trust that all of these have you met for the inheritance of the saints in light.
