ROOSEVELT IS PROUD OF HIS
GEORGIA ANCESTORS.
The New President Assures Livingston That
Sectionalism Shall Not Mar His Admin¬
istration. Georgia Ladies Call
on President Roosevelt.
A Washington special to the At¬
lanta Constitution says:
President Roosevelt today de¬
clared his intention to steer the
ship of state in southern waters
according to the McKinley chart.
This declaration was made at the
white house this morning in an
interview with Representative
Livingston, of Georgia, the first
democratic member of congress to
call at the executive mansion to
pay his respects to the new presi¬
dent.
Representative Livingston was
accompanied by two ladies and a
gentleman from Georgia—Mr. and
Mrs. C. V. Pruitt and Miss Anna
Pruitt, of LaGrange. They are
here on a visit, and requested Col.
Livingston to present them to the
new president. Mrs. and Miss
Pruitt were the first ladies to
make an official call upon Presi¬
dent Roosevelt since he entered
the white house, and they are
naturally proud of the distinc¬
tion.
Representative Livingston,after
presenting his Georgia constitu-
ents; stated that lie simply called
to pay his respects and wish the
president every success during his
administration. Congressman
Livingston added that in his hum-
We capacity as a member of the
house of representatives he desir-
ed to tender his services to assist
him so far as he could in admin-
istering the public affairs for the

benefit of the whole country.
NO USE FOB SECTIONALISM.
“My dear man,” exclaimed the
president, grasping the Georgia
congressman’s hand Rigorously, dividing
“I will have no use for
lines or sectionalism in this coun¬
try during my administration,
and I am sincerely grateful to you
for offering to help make my ad¬
ministration a national one. I
wish you would read my speech
made in Minnesota a few days be¬
fore President McKinley was
shot. I want you tt> tell me frank¬
ly if it was broad enough and lib¬
eral enough to cover every section
of this country. If it was, not, I
am willing to make it broader. It
will be my earnest and sincere en-
deavor to treat all the people of
this country alike without regard
to sectional lines. I want you to
understand that my mother was
from Georgia and that I have a
very warm and kindly feeling for
the people of Georgia and all the
people of the south. Now I want
you to remember that I am presi¬
dent of the whole country, and
during my administration it will
be my earnest desire to merit the
affection and confidence of the
people of the south as well as
those from the north, east or the
west.”
To all present there was a ring
of sincerity in the president’s ut¬
terance which deeply impressed
the Georgia congressman and his
friends, and also convinced the
republican senators and represent¬
atives who heard the manly senti¬
ments expressed by the president
that he intended to try and earn
the love and esteem of the south¬
ern people as did his lamentable
predecessor.
Representative Livingston stat¬
ed afterwards that he was pro¬
foundly impressed with the frank-

ness and the sincerity of President
Roosevelt’s friendly assurances to
the southern people, and he is
confident that all traces of sec¬
tionalism so effectively obliterated
during President McKinley’s ad¬
ministration will not bo revived
while President Roosevelt occu¬
pies the white house. Similar
sentiments of approval of Roose¬
velt’s southern policy were also
echoed by the republican congress¬
men present.
The president was even more
emphatic in his declaration to
Senator Pritchard and Represent¬
ative Klutz of North Carolina,
and Representative Gibson of
Tennessee.
“The south will support you
most heartily,” .said Senator
Pritchard, speaking for all three
of the southern men. “The dem¬
ocratic newspapers are predicting
good for you and of you and the
feeling of all the people for you,
irrespective of party, is most
kindly.”
“I am going to be president of
the United States and not of any
section,” replied the president.
“I don’t care for sections or sec¬
tional lines. When I was govern¬
or of New York I was told 1 could
make four appointments in the
army. When I sent in the names
three were from the south and the
other from New York. They were
brave men who deserved recogni¬
tion for services in the Spanish
war and it did not matter what
states they were from.”
President Roosevelt said further
that his mother was a southern,
woman, and that having lived in
the west he feels that he can rep¬
resent the whole country.
