Sunday’s Non Observance.
KDITOXR ADTBSttUR-AFnUI..
I am by no means a Sabbatarian
in tho strictest senso of the word. In
tho eyes of many I would probably
be looked upon as holding very lax
views on tho subject of the observance
of the Lord's day, but I do emphati
cally protest against making Sunday
a secular holiday, a day devoted at
watt Snpd»y last, to the publlo lecep
tion of this or that body of excur
sionists. As matters stand, the ar
rival of snbh people on Sundayacan-
not be avoided, but for a professedly
ohristlan city to charter a boat and
to'aend a deputation of her officials
much farther than a Sabbaih - day’s
Journey, for no charitable purpose,
but to biing baok a * crowd of men
and women who have evidently no
idea of reverence (or God’s holy day,
savors even in my. eyes altogether of
pammon, and therefore, of this world,
the flesh and the tlfivll. It is no Jus
tifloatlonto allege that Brunswick
will be bonefitted by the visit of these
persons. That is not certain even
fropi a temporal point ofview. Any
way, suck a line of conduct on the
part of the Municipal authorities
will bring a curso rather than a bless
ing on the city and all concerned.
Once secularise tho one day in the
week that God demands of us to bo
kept for him, and the downfall of
those so acting, even if postponed, is
sure. The mills of God may grind
slowly, but they grind exceedingly
small in tho end. For all who last
Sunday wprokopt from ehuroh, and
poral loss, whioh they cannot afford,
the city fathers are responsible in
the eyes of the Lord of tho Sabbath.
In that Council, I am told, are mem
bers of Christian ehux-ehes, office
bearers therein—yet not one Word,of
proteatfrom their pastors.
And in this connection it may well
disc iminhtlon in the administration
of tho Sunday laws in this city. A
man must go unshorn, unbathed,
without his oigar, his glass of lomon-
ade, or tho possibility of buying n
newspaper, while those who afford
such aocommodatlonB for money are
liable to prosecution. But ltvory
stables may be kept open, their own
ers may hire out horses, buggies and
hacks for profit to pleasure seekers,
and deprive all their help of their
Sabbath rest, boats may be let out,
