Thattoall buroombe. You get that in dime novels and French detective stories. Years ago, in foreign countries, that kind of thing was, perhaps, resorted to, but never nowadays. The most n man doss hero, perhaps, is to change his clothes.—Cleveland Leader. Tbs Triumph df Gunpowder. By 1450 tho simplest completo armor for liorso and man cost about $3,000 of our money, a largo sum for. a singlo sol dier. Ono shot might ruin all this, and knights, bravo with their lives, hesitated to risk a property so valuable) and so hard to replace. Thus the nobles retired to tho roar of tho battle, and in the pay of tho Fifteenth century princes half armed light cavalry appeared, doing real service, but requiring timo to obtain any prestige. Tho knights did not leam their lesson, but went on making amor heavier, to resist tho effects of powder. They had a momentary success at For* novo, but at Mnrignnno and Ravenna tho Swiss and Spanish infantry handled them roughly, whilo Pavia proved their inef ficiency to all. It seemed to them ter- riblo that BUch a knight as Bayard should have bis back broken by a pinch of powder and a shot from a common ‘soldier; but the change had to come. We find tho buff boot on the gentlemon who charged at Ivrv, and, in spite of Louis XIII, armor in his reign degener ated into a gala costume.—Scribner’s Want of Sleep Ii fending thtmtiiHt tQ tin iano MjpM When Canned Goods \yei-e Unknown. What did the world do before some body learned how to con all sorts of pro visions, flesh, fish, fowl, everything ani mal or vegetable that man cats or drinks? If the art had'been learned a century ago, what misery and want, what dis ease and famine It would have prevented. Now sailors do not need to dlo of scurvy, nor miners grow gaunt for want of vege table food, nor soldiers sicken from excess of hard tack, nor travelers and explorers perish for want of their accustomed food.'
