\ ABOUT INFERIOR CIGARS, om or the Trick* which AKuMtotkl •f Things, . “I wad • recent article on cheap d- ghitwith interest,” aald a cigar uuuu- facturer to a rettwt»w ! “i ***«,!„ mum. (acturo cigars, bo aa well. 1 don’t think that the quality <**££» *“ h “ bed a* It baa been] “Do you think the quality could be “ “ l theret made any worse?” ariced the reporter. “Certainly,'' laid tHo cigar man. “It could be made e great deal wone." “Then I should certainly give up the weed and go back to the cob pipe and oak leaves of my boyhood delight,’’ said the reporter. h. *, “Th^ fact of the -matter |a," aaid-the cigar man, “there are a great pie who do not know a good i they get hold of it. I’ve tested that matter to nraaatitfaction. I have delib erately retailed a 10 cent cigar for 8 ■ cents, and I have had persons look at i- one of these, tom it over, smell'll and ' declare it was no good, and insisted upon the regular old 8 center. Again, a cus tomer, after «mniHng my regular grade of S cent cigar for a long time, was fur nished some of the 10 cent brand. The next time he came in here he said: “ ‘Why did you change cigars on me?’ “ 'I gave you a better grade and I thought you Would prefer it* “ 'Well, I don’t think thereto anythin better about it, and I am sure I don', prefer it Give qxe some of toe same stock I have been used to having.' “You see, the man's tosto i3 thor oughly vitiated, He would have made the same complaint had I riven him » SO cent cigar. Tho better the cigar the worse ho would have considered it" “That all may be true,’’ replied the reporter, “but me fact remains that most of the cigars offered at public prices are simply ^ stinkers. How do you account “Tho foot of the matter is,'' said the dealer, “my custom is good and I have to furnish a high grade of cigar. But there is a class of manufacturers and re tailers who ester to what we call tran sient trade. They are tiie people who get rioh in a hurry and retire from the business. They, tho retailers, never think of giving a man the grade of cigar he asks for. They never expect to see him again, and unless, he investigates his cigar very closely he will not discover the inferiority of it until it begins to bum his tongue. Then he fires it into the gutter with an imprecation. They ore tho men who have no conscience, who make the money and who are re sponsible for the growl about cheap ci gars. Where are they? Everywhere. “Then, again, these transient trade sellows calculate that when a man has smoked thoArst half of a cigar he throws it away. To clinch an uncertainty they have manufactured for them a cigar the first half of which is filled with first class tobacooC while the second half is filled with miserable pickings. When the man finishes, the first half,he is in splendid humor; when be rated on the second half ho finds hto tongue beginning to itch, and the saliva in his mouth to have a pungent, nauseating taste, which makes him throw the cigar away. Ho cannot understand it, but thinks that it is oil caused by the nicotine which collects in the second half of the cigar tho nearer it is burned out. “Oh, yes; it is a sharp dodge—one of the trade—and dealers who count almost entirely on transient trade work it for all it is Worth. It is in a majority of cases this second half of miserable pickings ampiainta which is causing most of the complaint about the bad quality of the popular cigar. Not every man wakes up imme diately to the deception, and he puffs away on the second half with os much vigor and satisfaction as he did bn the first. Sometimes he don’t discover it and sometimes he does, hut don’t care a fig. He smokes to be smoking, and a. stinker suits him just as well os the choicest brand of Havana would.”—New York Evening Sun. The Hog Briitle* Trade. Yews ago it used to be the custom of our farmers, to save ail their hog bristles for taking to the stores as a marketable commodity, they usually getting a good price for them. But this has all chat now, like a great many ether things of Nobody buys bristles now, the past. since there is no' longer a market for them, owing to’their not being equal in quality to European bristles. All needed supplies by brush makers are now im ported from the old country. They are worth their freight in silver, and are sold that way, the money value being put on one ride of the scale and the bristle the other. —Westchester Local Nows. Nfws for Suffering Women. It still seems to be an unsettled ques tion whether wood can be ignited by the beat of a steam pipe in contact with it. It is admitted, theoretically, that it ig impossible for wood to take fire at s temperature 'of 819 degs.,or somewhat higher, but it is well known that there have been s large number of cases, of fire reported as occurring from thiscnaG, rad the evidence is very conflicting.—Nsw York Son.
