Halting a Million Out of m Kina Which Among tho many schemes to which the great banker, Ralston, who loved to be called the financial king of the Pacific coast, devoted no email share of tho California bank, of which ho was pros! dent, was tho exploiting of mince Id the ro of mount mountains close to the ih^vide* Artanui from Pyrnmld border lino wl New Mexico. THB was In the early seventies, when speculation was life, and i the discovery of bonansas an evi L event. Among tho employes of I in tho Pyramid mines was one (£■ Arnold, a man of, meager education, hot II bright and ambitious. In hia shanty on f tho wild mountain side be woe ever dreaming of some plan that w< Dame Fortune to his feet. 'While yet dreaming his dream of wealth there came to him the bright colored story of the great diamond discoveries at Capo - ■ Colony. His brain at once devised a scheme which, in its way, equaled Law's ‘ • South sea bubble. The soil aroudd the Pyramid district was rich in qplor and had character enough to inaugurate any mining scheme, however wild ‘and impracticable. So with a comrade, Jim Haggerty, with whom he bad long been associated, Arnold made long tours over tho sur rounding country. After a few weeks of this kind of work he resigned his place in the mines, with the given intention at seeking the fairer fields of Mexico. He next turned up in San Francisco in the fall of 1871. He immediately found Ralston, and even astonished that bold operator by revealing that he had dis covered in Arizona rich diamond fields quite as extensivo as those of Capo Colony. From tho grip sack he had brought with him he poured forth a wondrous display of rough diamonds which had been washed from tho yield- Ing soil of the new find. They were many and apparently of value. * Ralston, ever ready for a venture, ly one which promised such daz- ig results, entered at once into a pro- cd exploration of tho new diamond [elds. He introduced Arnold to several leading capitalists, who at onco bocamo enthusiastic over too new Golconda. With the rapid action peculiar to Californians, the clique who hod been let into the se cret immediately determined to visit too mines, and. It found to bo all right, to purchase Arnold’s claim and title for toe sum of $1,000,000. Arnold reluctantly accepted the offer. On their return to Son Francisco tho capitalists wished to form a company. In ten days it was accomplished. Ar nold was paid his $1,000,000 and made superintendent of tho new mines. He nt onco make known tho location of tho diamond fields, and they were visited by several stockholders in toe company. Diamonds were found by each and all of • them, and all went merry as a marriage bell until Arnold skipped for too east. It tas then thought best to call in an experts and' Professor King, tho well known geologist, was selected. Ho first discovered that the ground around tho clump of trees on the bank of tho Rio Prieto had been cleverly “salted" with refuse diamonds, 6uch ns may bo cheaply bought in too marts of Amsterdam. It was also seen that the diamonds found by the capitalists had been “tried" at Amsterdam, and, as Professor King said, “while diamonds mayaexist in Arizona, It is hardly to be expected that nature will produce them partly out or polished." The members of the new diamond com pany were both thunderstruck and Indig nant, and steps were quickly taken to bring Arnold to justice. He was at his homo in his native Kentucky, and tho machinery of the law was brought to bear upon him there. He was arrested, . but never taken out of tho bluo grass country for punishment. In some man ner ho secured his release, and entered upon a life of wild enjoyment. His ex cesses were of short duration, and. after fivo years of feasting and rioting with ill- wealth, he died.—Providence News fbr Suffering Women. Mobvxx, Ga., Fob.,20,1887. Mb, M. A. A remarkable engineering feat lias just been carried out in China in toe face of unusual physical obstacles. This was tho stretching of a steel cable of seven strands across the Luon river by Mr. A. dc Linde, a Danish engineer, aided only by un skilled Chinese labor. Tho cable is strung from two points 4,648 feet apart. Tho height of one support is 447 feet above tho present level of the river and the sec ond support 787 feet above it. The vortex over the water is seventy-eight feet. The Chinese cable is the longest but one in the world. The tclegragh air cablo across toe Kistna has a span of S,070 feet; two similar cables cross tho Ganges, one 2,600 and too other 2,880 feet.
