Oyster culture has had a great de velopment in Frirnce. Thus, while in 1857 there were iri the Bay- of Arcoohon twenty parks, or district oyster beds, in 1805 there were 287 beds, producing 10.000. 000 oysters annually, and there aro now 15,000 acres of beds, yielding on annual supply of 800,000,000 oysters. From Aunty, on the coast of Brittany, 7.000. 000 oysters were sent to market in 1876-77; in 1888 the numbers exceeded 70.000. 000* On tho other band, tho British oyster industry lias declined, and tho coast which furnished ancient Rome with oysters, and within a generation ex ported them to Paris, now ranks lew in tho list of . oyster nurseries.—Public Opinion. ’ • STEAMERS CAltQNDELET, • .
