when the remit ia a failure, a* In nlnetr-

But When the remit chance* to be a suc

must be, the whole itory is gravely to-

ingenuity.
Yet It is idle to inveigh against tho
' folly of such fancies and superstitions.
They have existed in all ogee and among
all races from time immemorial. Carry
ing in themselves their own contradic
tion, they also carry in themselves wliat
to believers in luck appears their full
confirmation. For bo does not observe
that tlie ideas about luck which run
through bis mind are contradictory, and
in their self Contradiction provide for
every event. When success vcomea to him

faith iu luck is confirmed; but when
failure arrives ho to not a whit less satis
fied that ho holds the true faith about
luck, for he lias another doctrine about
that event atoo Richard A. Proctor.
Aloohol for Diphtheria,
Alcohol, wo make bold to say, to tho
prince of antiseptics and tho most perfect
and reliable medicine of which we have
any knowledge in diphtheria. Diluted
with equal parts of water and given in
small and repeated* doses, the malignant
symptoms of this most fatal malady soon
disappear, and convalescence becomes
assured, n. to interesting to noto with
what facility tho alcohol dissolves the
diphtheric exudation in tho throat, lowers
the temperature and calms tho pulse,
showing its destnlctiye action upon the
germs of the disease,.which have been
absorbed by the glands and gained access
to the blood. This remedy has been used
by us in tho treatment of diphtheria einco
' 1878, during which time no caso of the
diseaso has slipped through our hands
except in One solitary Instance, and that
cose was In artlculo mortis before the
remedy was given. The remedy to also
propliylactio to tho disease, as we have
found in many instances where it has
been expedient to quarantine the patient.
For tills purpose it to only necessary for
exposed persons to uso the remedy,
diluted ob ahovo stated, os a gargle and
to swallow a little of it three or four
times a day.—Medical Times.

Birch wood 1* preferred. The birch is
first sawed into sticks four or five feet
long and soven-eightlis of an inch to
throe inches square, according to tho elro
of tbo spool to bo produced. These sticks
are thoroughly seasoned. They are
sawed into short blocks, and the blocks
aro dried in a hot air kiln. At tho time
they are sawed a lioio is bored through
them. One whirl of the little block

a second. A small boy feeds tho spool
mnehine, simply placing the blocks in a
spout, and throwing out the knotty or
defective stock. The machine is auto

spools ore revolved rapidly in drums and

they are dyed yellow, red or black. They
are made in hundreds of shapes and

words do not signify that tho thread has
been measured, but that the spool has
been gauged and is supposed to contain
so much thread.—Golden Days.
A Valuable Literary Discovery,
A literary event of national importance
has taken place in Japan. Ono of the
legation pffleers, now with tho now min
ister to Germany, recently discovered in
tho Ashiknga college (Tsuh-li Hioh) a
copy of Ilwang K'an’s Oonfucinn Ana
lects over 1,200 years old, with all the an
cient commentator’s notes. This work
has disappeared in China ever since tho
Southern Sung dynasty—1. e., for soino
700 or 800 yeore; and os the whole his
tory of tho present copy to known, tho
Chinese government has directed the
minister in Japan to borrow It, in order
that a carefully corrected copy may bo
taken. It may be added that should
there bo any Kina inscriptions upon this
copy valuable light will also be thrown

1 Oyiter Culture in Franco.
Oyster culture has had a great de
velopment in Frirnce. Thus, while in
1857 there were iri the Bay- of Arcoohon
twenty parks, or district oyster beds, in
1805 there were 287 beds, producing
10.000. 000 oysters annually, and there
aro now 15,000 acres of beds, yielding on
annual supply of 800,000,000 oysters.
From Aunty, on the coast of Brittany,
7.000. 000 oysters were sent to market in
1876-77; in 1888 the numbers exceeded
70.000. 000* On tho other band, tho
British oyster industry lias declined, and
tho coast which furnished ancient Rome
with oysters, and within a generation ex
ported them to Paris, now ranks lew in
tho list of . oyster nurseries.—Public
