Norwood, our Rep resentative, are back and 1n good spirits over tho prospects from their labors. Dr. Maddeq Informs us that thoy found none who were unwilling to lend a helping band. The various committees heard our delegation through patiently and attentively, and asked dozens of questions, indie ative of more than passing interest. The Doctor feels sure wo will get tho appropriation asked for a public building, and a generous slice of thpt asked for tho harbor. Besides these thoy made such a showing ns will en title us to a second-class postal sor- vice, instead of third, as now. They also secured six hundred dollars for the mail route to Fernandtnn, with a prospoot of having the Dungenncss post office added thereto, which is $300 more. Unlikomany others our delegation only asked for arlne.' needs, which bo impressed tho commitices that they felt like granting all in their power. Savannah asked for $6,000,000, Pitts burgh, Pa., aa Dr. M. expressed it, wanted to have a wholo island dug up and another one planted near by, whilst modest Brunswick only asked for $100,000 for a publio building, $75,000 for our harbor, and $38,000 for Jekyl creek. wiw were moat cordially received by Mr. Norwood, who has certainly won their esteem. Darien Items Clipped from the Gazette. The Bteamor Hessio seems to bo doing well. No wonder, she runs be tween the two livest towns in Geor gia—Brunswick and Dai leu. Darien real estate is in demand now and it sells readily. The rivers have boon,in bettor raft ing condition this season than was over known before. Darien Short Lino is to bo com pleted by July. It is said by ono who knows that tho whole State of Georgia is now Jiunting on Blackboard Island. The work of building construction cars has commenced in Darien, Over a thousand raft hands havo been in Darien since Christmas. Tho price for square timber has dropped a little but scab is always in demand and br'ngs a fine price in our maiket. During tho Jasper Festival the steamer Hessio will carry passengers from Darien to Brunswick and re turn for one fare. It will require a great mpny vessels to move tho largo stock of timber now on hand in Darien. Last week wo inquired of the Jos- up Sentinel when tho passongor de pot at Josup would be built. The last issue of the Sontinel says: “Our patience has ceased to be a virtue, and tho Gazette should ask us some thing easy. We have tried to find out, but tho secret seems to be locked up. If the traveling public would curse the railroads wo would lcayo it to them, but they heap their abuse upon Jesup, and we now declare war and you can count us in tho fight from this date. We join issues with the Gazette and Advertiser-Appeal, and we will be ably backed by the Macon Telegraph. To Rent; The store bow occupied by the Marlin. Dry Goods Co. A correspondent from Augusta, Ga., thus writes a business man of ourpldco: Hero are the facts. Wo have but one regularly established iruit mar ket on tbo South Atlantic or Gulf Coast, which is Now Orleans, being tbo source from which tl|e cities of tho oatito West draw thej: fruit sup* plies, and 'which n moments thought will convinoo yon are simply enor mous, yet not incredible, as they arp facts. Of Ihcse^ho greater bulk are brought from tho West ^Indies, and the business is extensive! ed on a system of bartor lumber being the prinui ity. This present eeaso; has discovered she has alfortunoly ing at her doors, long beqh knocking for adinil'.nnso and only magical touch of enterpu itnl to transform opportunity into wealth. TI:o merchants havo char tered a small fleet of sal to engage in .lie Si ado, already brought lift’ su and having found a ready and re munerative market have b :on reload ed with lumber, and sent: for more. These merchants are ma ing heavy fruit shipments to oU th i principal interior cities and tawni thus se curing immenso volum of trade which can bo easily diverted t > oth er channels if your capltwtsts would avail themselves of far ciHtiervrtttr promtwr conduct- rexchango, pd commod- 2ha ,’leston ailing tho and cap ig vessels iiich have ;oes »ruit, action. You can furnish the same lumber at lc-s prices with far better margins, which ensures you tho bulk of trade, and by putting on a steam er, of say 1,500 tons, simply by tho lows of supply and demand, you would at once control tho business of tho entire fleet, which is plainly evidenced by the fact that steam has supplanted tho freght carrying ca pacity in nearly every important port on the American coast both foreign and coastwise, and especially in car rying fruits is its importance cou ceded, being able to lay it down in better condition, making schedule time, thus keeping tho markets sup plied and making two or three trips to their one. Those Bchooncrs ore doing busi ness principally at Baiacoa, Cuba, yet with steam facilities you havo Uaracoa, Jamaica, St. Domingo, Por to Rico and a dozen other important ports, and with your prospective fa cilities for cheap coal at Uruuswick for.steamiug pnrposcs as well as rail communication for interior transi>or- tation. there is no reason why tho business should not bo indefinitely extended and expanded and your lo cality bo mado tho greatest fruit dis tributing depot on tho South Atlan tic Coast Towed in for Repairs. Tho steam tug Inca towed into this port to-day the schooner Carrie A. Buckman for repairs. Sho became water logged some months ago, and was abandoned and sold to Captain Gray, who rigged up some sails on her and got hor intosomo port below this, and was to-day towed in here. Tho Captain will replank her heie and do other necessary repairs at a cost of several thousand dollars. That Rarest of Combinations.
