Tliia was during what Is known ns the age of chalk, or too cretaceous period— owl millions of yean ago, if our geologi cal estimates are correct. The question os to whether man existed then m an in teresting one. Evidence of human Ufa has not been found; yet them were rest areas of laud, with animals and pianta'of great variety, and as them was nojphyai- i cal barrier to human existence, In tho opinion of many the cretaceous conti nents and islands were populated fay man. Knowing the actual conditions of Ufa at this cany time, the strange animals that lived during it, it is a comparatively easy matter to understand or appreciate the daily life of our ancestors. It i« evident that they wero much more primitive than oven tho bush man of to day. and undoubtedly were what we would term wild men, living in rooks and caves os the lower animals do. They wero essentially hunters and fishermen, depending upon g&mo for their susto- nanco. The small continent of America at this time had in nil probability low, marshy coasts, and the groat ocean or gulf, whoso coast line con be traced from Arkansas to near Fort Riley, on the Kansas river, up to Minnesota to Canada, near tho head of Lako Superior, was a vast shallow sea. On its borders we mny imagino cliffs of sandstono worn out into caves and quarries, in which these early fishermen mode their homes.—Phila delphia Times. Sending Unsealed Letter*. The “point of etiquette,” in regard to not sealing letters sent by tho hand of a friend, is to bo considered, undoubtedly, as sottled by the usage of polite society. And yet there nro two sides to tho ques tion. To intrust to a friend an unsealed letter to a third person is a compliment to tho friend; but why should it l>o thought necessarily uncomplimentary if tho letter bo sealed! On the other hand, tho sealing of a letter may bo deemed always advisable, for ono good reason at least. Thp contents of on unsealed letter are never safe. They are safo so for os tho honorable friend is concerned, but not safe in any other sense. They may be lost from the cnvclopo easily and in nocently. Thoy may bo abstracted and read by the sorvant to whom the noto. is delivered at tho dnor, or by any paring individual'who may find the missive Tying on tho hall table and awaiting tho owner’s arrival. Esppcially unsafo is it to place in an un sealed package articles of largo money value. .Would any sano man send a $50 hill In nil unsealed envelope by tho hand of a friend or anybody whomsover? Tho friend, himself, if ho knew tho nature of (ho inclosuro, would lie very dpt to pro test against this sacrilico of common sense nt tho shrine of etiquette.—“C. S. A Story of Melsaonler. i Tho enterprising manager of a Paris theatre onco called upon Mclssonior and asked him to paint a drop scene for a certalh theatre and narfto Ins own terms. “You.lmvo scon my pictures, then?" asked Meissonier. “Oh, yes," exclaimed tho manager; “but it is your name—your name I wont; it will draw crowds to my theatre.” “And how largo is it you wish this curtain to be!” inquired tho artist “Ah, well, we will say fifteen meters by eighteen." Meissonier took up a pencil and proceeded to make a calculation. At last he looked up and said with imper turbable gravity: “I liavo calculated and find that my pictures are valued at 80,- 000 francs per meter. Your curtain, therefore, will cast you just 01,000,000 francs. But that is not all. It takes mo twelve mouths to paint twenty-five cen timeters of canvas. It will, therefore, take me just 100 yean to finish your curtain. -You should have come to me earlier, monsieur; I am too old for tho undertaking now. Good morning.”— Art Amateur. pi# in hies!
