‘ A Meeea Is Horsemen,
A Canadian writer draws attention to
the fact that many horses aro subjected
to much pain,by the bits being put into
their mouths on very cold mornings with
out precaution being token to freo them
from frost. He makes tho following re
marks on the subject, which are certainly
worthy of consideration: “Tbo bits should
bo canted into tho houso and thawed out
by tho kitchen stove, or, dipped into a
pail of water. If you wpnt a lesson you
will not soon forget In regard to this
matter, put your. tonguo against a bit
that lias been exposed nil night to a zero
temperature. It will stick fast, and you
will not get it freo without leaving some
of tho skin behind!” Giving horses ieo
water is also cruel, and not calculated to
conserve tho health of tho most useful
licljien man has on tho farm.—Chicago

Thero was an advance party of somo

Reporting Bismarck’* Speeches.
Tho task of taking down the prince's
speeches is not an easy one. Tho official
stenographers often trip up on liis words,
ns in his recent speech, wherein the cor
rection had to bo mado about Ilia refer
ence to Russia and Bulgaria. Tho inoor-
rect version came from the unofficial ac
counts, and tho correction from the prince
himself. The stenographers who toko
his words havo afterword to write out
their notes in long hand, and tlieso aro
submitted to the chancellor, who makes
corrections before they aro published as
tbo official utterances.—John P. Jackson

Alooliollo Coma.
In cases of alcoholic poisoning—tho
comatose condition of intoxication—tho
promptest recovery of consciousness will
follow the subcutaneous injection of a
mixture of one part of ammonia with
two to six parts of water. Polico sur
geons who havo to deal with cases of un
consciousness will find this a convenient
method of determining whether a givon
coso is due to whisky, compression of the
brain or nervous disorder.—Chicago
