Tho tact U tlint tho climate of California la a climate differing almost *ith every county, and ■ to apeak of tto climate, of California n« a wliolo la greatly to mlalcad people, for you cannot say it ia perfectly flno or de testably mean, although both could be said with truth fay any one interested in mylng tho ono or tho other. Tho climate, far example, of San Fran cisco during certain months of tho year is beyond measure fine. Our eastern Mends, leaving the frqsty air and dying vegetation ushering in their long cold winters, ride right into our mild Indian bummer, fdled with full fipened fruits, luxurious flowers and perfect vegetation; or, leaving the frost and snows of Christ* mas, And here a bright, warm Indian winter, flowers in full bloom, faults in plenty, etc., and tourists taking their tripat that time of the year are apt to return home and convey the idea of some wonderfully glorious, warm, delightful climate. But what about the cold fogs, that lie nearly half of tho year like a heavy pall over tho city, commencing early in tho afternoon and disappearing only late in the mornings? What about tho clouds of dust swept down by the cold winds from the ocean! What about the long, dry, dusty summer months, when everything is withered and parched, and oil aro fairly choked with dust and want of rain, and-sickness and death are on every lumd from unflushed sowers, etc. f What about tho long, wearisome mips, although tho mins are really the least disagreeable feature of all tho ills of the San Francisco climate? » While oil this is true of San Francisco, yet, right across the bay, in what might be called tho suburbs (yet really San Francisco has no suburbs, an objection able feature for commerce), the climato is milder—less fogs, less chilling winds, less dust, etc.; and, still again, ns you Ieavo San Francisco and travel southward •the change in climato is more noticeable. Ono can write most truthfully of the climate of California and yet contradict one’s self at every other line. From all this the conclusion can justly bo drawn that each one. can find the climato they most like by a proper selection of county. Tluj climate of San Diego is written of as mild and equable and delightful, and many poor consumptives are enticed here, only to meet with disappointment, like one poor man (an example of many) who, arriving in Sun Diego, expecting to find in its mild and salubrious air a length of life, if not a permanent euro, • was ntet, on descending from tho cars, by such clouds of duBt, such cold and . piercing fog and wind, that, overcome by weakness and disappointment, ho S ped on to the first seat, shivering crying. Yet a few miles from Son Diego,'had he but known it, is a good, line climato for consumptives. A friend of ours, a young man, for whose life no hope was felt 'and who was carried to this part of the state, is now happy in the enjoyment of almost perfect health. California Cor. Tho Russian authorities allow the mer chants to cheat their customers in every thing but furs, Bilvcr and gold plate, and adulterated food. Tho latter is prohib ited from sale under penalty of imprison ment. Imitation furs must bo marked so that the customer may tell what he is buying, and all silver and gold must liear tho government brand to attest its fine ness. There is no plated silver to bo lmd, but tho shops are full of tho genuine solid article, in every possiblo form, and for every possiblo uso, and it is generally all gilded. You seo little silver in tho natural state. Spoons, knives, watches, chains’, articles of personal adornment in every possible variety, plates, platters, cups, goblets, all sorts of tableware is mado of silver and then gilded to look liko gold, and gratify the Russian taste for display. The solid Bilvcr dinner service for tho winter palace, which will servo 8,000 people, is gilded, and tho shops along tho Nevski Prospect and other flno streets aro blaring with tho same sort of stuff. But tho merchant must inform tho customer of tho diame ter of his wares. If he sells gilded rilver for gold ho goes to prison. The ladies of tho country load themselves with or naments of gilded silver, bracelets, chains, brooches, pins, and every other form of decoration. Even marblo and wood is gilded.
