Fish Livin ' «>•.» of " e'er.
Some years ago in ’.fricaadcLichment
of troops came u> van .•.•■no 1- v,l stretch
of country, perfectly ur,v and devoid of a
suspicion of moisture. In digging up the
ground to arrongo tho tents a fish was
found as dry as a chip—a long eel like
creature coiled in n ball and seemingly
incased in a mud cocoon. Tlio fish was
supposed to bo mummified aud was taken
as a curiosity and in tho course of several
weeks fell into tho bauds of a naturalist,
whet placed it in wntor. Tho n\ud slowly
dissolved and soon tlio fish gavo a gssp,
thdn a convulsive struggle, like a sleeper
awakening, finally swimming oil.
Hero was a singular example of a fish
living out of water. It belonged to a
. group known as lung fishes, tlio atom
hers of which have a peculiar faculty of
migrating overland and of being able to
exist not merely days but months out of
continent dry up, and were it not for
some provision which enables 'the fishes
- to bridge over this time it is evident that
many would be destroyed. Nature, how
ever, comes to. tho rescue, and, os the
• waters dry Up,‘the fishes either crawl
away to other streams or immediately
, descend into the earth, where they form
'themselves into a round boll and Uo hi a
semi-desiccated condition until the water
comes .the ensuing season. It is even
said tlmt fishes havo been known to pass
two consecutive seasons in this condition.
