TH1 TAU* BLOODHOUND.
A ■tMHnlMlattlM D«r UnuriiKOM
MilaM-CkWMtwbllM,
The tnio bloodhound originated from
tho old Talbot breed at Northern ~ *
From there door hound* of old
the modem Texas bloodhound £ din
•oended. Of oouna there nre other
dee of bloodhounds, viz., the flit* ,.
bloodhound, which is an 'immense ant*
tnal, and too entirely ferocious to use in
the pursuit of any human hbinw and the
Cuban or Spanish bloodhound, which is
nearly akin to the one just named. Ths^
latter were used by the Spanish »«ir»<i«rc
to track Indians, and in later time* tore-
claim fugitive slaves, but they have
fWfr » w, been used by any one in
the United Stsita They era beddes,an
entirely different breed dogvT^
The Cuban bloodhound is a
tion of the deer hound, the taodoue
mastiff and the Ruslan for Siberian)
CMhoond. r they thne unite the uner
ring aoent of the deer bound, the savage
fdoodttiintinees of the mastiff and the
Slftiniii ef the greyhound. TheywOl
.track e fugitive, and, having •‘bayed”
him, will tear him in piece*.
Fhr different from this terrible animal
fa the genuine Texas bloodhound. The
name “blood” bound is, in fact, in a cer
tain sense, a misnomer. The Texas
bound Is not a savage animal, save when
wounded,‘of when resistance is made.
' They are true descendants of the splen
did animals which made such royolsport
for. the Norman kings und nobles. Gen
tle, patient, untiring and magnificent in
strength, they are at once the patricians
of their taoeand the favorites of their
masters. The cruel admixture of blood
which gives the Cuban hound his devil
ish hatred of a fleeing foe is, happily,
absent from the physical development of
our American hounds. Indeed, public
opinion .would not for a moment tolerate
, the use pf the Cuban hound in pursuit of
criminals, even of the most desperate
character.' The object to. be attained by
the use of bloodhounds is not the death
or mangling of the man pursued, but his
capture, and the bound is, therefore,
called into requisition not on account of
his powers of rtisfnirtlon. but because
his unerring inxtmm will guide him
straight and true tho path tlitf culprit
has taken, even though twenty-four
hours may have elapsed and rains have
fallen and winds have blown to render
the scent cold and faint and perplexing.
These noble animals have inherited all
the Instincts of their forefathers, who
gave back the deep and mellow echo qf
their bay in English glades in response
to the notes blown by royal lips.
When Cceur do Lion and his noble
train, pursued the fleeing stag through
sunny Sherwood’s forest rales they knew
by the note of the hound that the ant-
lend foe, arrow stricken and bleeding,
was hayed by the fhithful pack, but only
bayed. The panting animal did not at
tempt to slake his thirst in the bibod of
hie majestic prey, as the Cuban hound
would have done, but sore and famishing
as he was, he kept the buck on the de
fensive until the hunters arrived, and it
was only when the arm of his royal or
noble master had driven home tho sharp
steel blade that he ventured to feast on
the rich, red current which flowed from
the stricken throat of the gallant foe
which had led him many a weary tnile
that day over bog and moor; mountain
stream and bosky thicket. '
And in tills power of restraint consists
the great, the true value of the Texas
hound. He .responds faithfully to
the inherited instincts of his race. Trained
to track a stag, ho will follow him until
ho lias bayed him, and will leave the
victim unharmed until the arrival of the
hunter. Trained to track man, he Will
do tho 6amo thing exactly. Henco, as
sheriffs do not desire the death but fho
capture of -criminals, it will easily be
seen how far superior the Texas hound is
to his Cuban cousin, and how much
better adapted to the needs of a humane
and civilized people.
It may l>o token ds an absoluto fact
that no fugitive need fear harm from a
Texas bloodhound if, when brought to a
stand, he. will remain quiet until his
captors come. If he offers resistance,
continues his flight or wounds the hound,
why, then the hound will do just os his
master would do under similar circum
stances, and resort to extreme measures
to defend himself.—Galveston Cor. Globo-
