Some of the idees promulgated were interesting, and showed that many of the auctioneer! are anxious to rid the craft of the monot onous system of selling now commonly in vogue. Oco very silvery "tongued dweller on the rostrum said that in sell ing a fancy rocking chair it should be described as a sermon in leather; a che- val glass as the jocose production of a Scandinavian artisan; a couch os a dream in plush, on which to seek and llnd ropoee; a . parlor’Bet .os having caught the rays of h vanishing rainbow; another, as entrancing as the gleam of tho stars or the splendor which dies with the moon; n parlor set possessing a placid yet. tepid aspect; a dining room in antique oak, a perfect gusli of vo, luminous euphony; an easy chair, a eapricj in raw silk; a davenport, beau teous but mingled with a sweet half sad ness, and an ordinary refrigerator as a symphony of Siberian frigidity.—New York Graphio. * ——————— IZowXord Clive Won Bit Wife. About the middle of the last century a| S i ; cadet named Maskdeyno went to where he became acquainted with Lord Clive. Tho acquaintance ripened into intimate friendship and led to con stant association. There bang up in , Maskeleyno’s room several portraits, amongothersa miniature which attracted Clive’s frequent attention. Oflo day after the English mail bad arrived Clive asked Maskdeyno if ho had received any English letters, addihg: “Wo have been very much, misunderstood at bc uiu and much censured in English circles." Tho S-.veUt of'tho World. .* ' ■ I suppose everybody has noticed that it Is moredifflcult to pose os a swell in,a big town than a small one. Tho some may he said in flie cities of the world. It to somewhat on the following plan: In Chicago—A man may tie a swell if ho bp* a pot of money. It to permissible to -he engaged in business. ' New York—Money first, foremost and forever, but no business that approaches the retail. Vienna—Social eminence, particularly with women, military position, good family. Berlin—Military prestige. Paris—Money, manners, recklessness, originality in bin and u popular fad. Business not to be thought of. ‘ London—Blood, title, but not neces sarily money, if endowed with natural aptitude for imitating the leaders of fashion. No connection with any busi ness venture, absolute correctness in every detail of attire and outwnrd cir cumstance, and an endless amount of admiration for recognized social leaders. It struck mo that men of distinctive tendencies toward swelldom in Chicago missed tho details small and attractive of both life and attire, while, to be frank, there are, in New York, very fow men who approach anything like tho stand ard reached by their models across the water.—Blakely Eall’e Letter.
