fitted aa a convict transport. With a ' _ .
fall complement of convict* tho vessel
carries 033. Tile more desperate clmrnc
ters arc manacled and chained to iron
rtapli'a in their berths, from which they
are released when ueoeasary. Among
llie 400 convicts carried by tlm Nizlini-
Novgorod about 100 are murderers. Upon
the greater number of these murderers,
in addition to their various terms of liard
labor in the mines and quarries, will be
inflicted uiioii their arrival a number of
blows fro;.i the knout, varying from fifty
to 123. according to their crimes. Man-
acted anti crouching at the end of ono of
tho eager was a convict about 83 years
of age. There was nothing particularly
villainous in the man’s face, though it
was by no means well favored by nature.
What struck me especially was ins pallid
look and apparently general bodily lan
guor. Seven 'years ago this man had
committed murder and was sent to Sibe
ria for life, the first five years’ hard bbor
to be worked in the mines. After Uto
expiration of his mine bbor lie managed
to esc:i|>o, and was only rearrested after
committing n second murder.
Ho is now sentenced to mine bbor in
Saghalien for life, to receive 123 blows of
the knout onAferival on the island, and
thereafter to iRhained to lib barrow or
hand wagon for the first twelve months
of lib sentence. In these cases there b
no unchaining; tho chains are welded on
the convict’s limbs. “How long do you
imagine thb poor wretch will exist under
the conditions of hb first year's punish
ment ?” I asked lay guide, who has spent
some years of official service in Saghalien.
“Possibly a month—ror two. Tho shorter
the better for the poor devil. ’’ It b thb
qnestkra which does not appear to occur
to the “humanitarian’’ defenders of the
Russian penal code—whether capital pui i-
bbment were not an unqualified mercy
to such criminals, and their number b
terribly large in Russia. The convict’s
horror and dread of having to live out
theae sentences b shown by the desperate
attempts at self destruction he b ever
ready to make. Tho scene on board these
deputing ships is altogether saddening
and depnming, perhaps the more so that
one does not hoar a murmur or lament
from the stolid looking and broken spir
ited wretches crowded behind the bars of
theso cages, which remind the spectator
only too forcibly of the, wild beast dens
wcare accustomed to see inn. traveling
menagerie.—Odessa Cor. London News.

How to Frolonx life.
I have been much interested in recent
articles dh “The Christian Science,” “No
dore Sickness and Death,” and “The
*rolongation of ■ life.” I like those
articles amazingly, well, as for yean I
have had a bobby like them and am still
astride of it, only mine b a muscular one,
and it doesn't matter whether your
thinker is wound up and going or not.
If I tell you of it, in an old fashioned
way, so you may keep your spine crooked
in tho right direction and make yourself
feel ten or more years younger, it may
do eomo gxxl.
Please cull to mind how listlessly old
peoplo crmvl out of bed in the morning,
also if tiioro are any young peoplo iq this
room getting up, notice how the urchins
stretch themselves. Also call to mind
how a person just recovering from a sick
bed b inclined to do the same. - Coll to
mind how seldom middle aged and old
folks aro inclined to stretch unless ex
pecting something of importance.
I hare found that a good, long stretch
in tliu morning, as soon as on my feet,
has turned the bend of my back to tho
front, lias taken the stoop out of my
shoulders, and my wife says my hair b
becoming dork again. I havo sons post
80 years of ago who step no lighter than
I; and ns for my eating qualifications, I
defy any man to get away with mo.
Of courso I take a stretch several times
n day. with great benefit. I don’t know-
why it docs mo good, only to forco the
blood and other jutoe of tho body where
they boloug. Anyhow, I know it makes
me feel young, and others I havo told
about it say it does them great good—

Mistletoe on Telegraph TVlre*.
A traveler in Brazil writes to a horti
cultural paper telling of the crop of mis
tletoe that ho found growing on tele-
h wire* near Rio Janeiro. When ho
saw it he thought that floods had
left weeds hanging to the wires, but n
nearer inspection and the height of tho
wires convinced him that the apparent
weeds were thousands of little mi
firmly fixed to the wires, Many
of this plant grow in Brazil, and some,
called “bird weeds,” bear berries which
ore eaten by birds. The seeds are de
posited on tho telegraph wires and take
root. They are short lived, of course,
bat the constant deposits of seed clothe
tho wires with thb curious fringe.—New
