caught they aro eviscerated, cleaned and
packed away in ico houses down in tho
hold. But some varieties must ho brought
back alive. Smacks engaged in this
branch of tho business have a eontriv-
anco known‘os “tho well," sunk in tho
hull, through which tho sen water con
stantly circulates. Tho “well" is simply
a deep tank located amidships, reaching
from side to side of the smack. Its bot
tom is water tight. ere tlio sides which
shut it off from the hold. Holes bored
in tho outer sides, formed by tlio vessel's
hull, admit tlio sea water, mid ns tho
smack moves along the water circulates
through tho “well." Tho tlsh arc thrown
into this “well” as they are hauled in
and remain in their uativo (jlemqnt until
tho smack runs into tho Fulton Market
slip. Then they aro lifted out by means
ot long polo scoop nets and placed in tho
“care" surrounding tho smacks.—Now
