II ■ not, I fnar, to our credit tluit curiosity got the UltUT of our scruples. We knocked at a cottage door one Sunday afternoon, J , us excuse, asking for a light. As we drew near we heard the voice of some one reading aloud. Now It was silenced, and a tall old man In his shirt slsevcs came to tbo door with an open Bible in his hands. Within, on' the left, was tbo dweilinfldkra of the household; on the right, tV stable. Cattle and family share tjfponly entrance. Into the roohi, »single pane of glues, one ray t fell across the Rembrandt' ANYBODYI thi i mud door, at the far end. a lire ] burned with dull ted glow, and its thick, choking smoke curled in cioude about the rafts and softened the shadows. We could just make out the figures of two women crouching by the fife, the curtained bed In the corner, the spinning wheel opposite. All other details were lost in gloom and smoke. Until you see in. our Nineteenth century men still live like tills. Miss Gordon Cummin^ says that to, the spinning and weaving of the women “is due much of tuc^. comfort, aswe may sec by a .peep into somo of their little homes. r< But our peep showed us only that women weave and men work in vain, and that to apeak of com fort is mockery in a cottage of Harris, or, indeed, In any cottage we jaw in any part of toe islands. For all'those wo Went into were slike in their poverty and their darkness. As a rule the fire burned in the center on a circle of stones,* and over it, from the roof, bung chain and hook for the kettle. They have not changed one jot or tittle since, a cortury ago. they moved Pennant to pitv • The Origin of a Poem. Longfellow's poem of this title tells how the Moravian nuns “consecrated the banner in a ohapel or church and pre sented it to the hero with injunctions that he should bear himself with bravery and magnanimity under its folds and that if he fell in battle the banner should ■be used as his martial cloak and shroud.” The concluding lines are: And the warrior took that banner proud, And It was his nisitial cloak and shroud. It is a fact that Count CasimirPulaski, visiting Lofayetto when he lay sick at Bethlehem, Fa., in 1770, procured a ban ner from the Moravian Sisters in that place. On the dcntlf of Pulaski the banner passed into the hands of Capt. Bcntalou, of Bob r in tho possession of tltnoro. and is now tho Maryland Historical society in that city. In n newspaper interview Mr. Long- felio‘ * liq«’ told tho origin of the poem in these words: “It was one or my early works. I v.-roto it while at college. I read in a newspaper that tho Moravian women at Bethlehem hod embroidered n banner and presented it to Pulaski. Tbo story tuado an impression on my mlnd^ r I wrote tho poem. and one idlo day I wrote tho poem. I called them Moravian Nuns because I had gathered from something I had read that they were colled nuns. ■ I suppose I should liuvo said Moravian Bisters, but but tho chango doesn't spoil tho ro mance." New York's Chinese Residents. We liavo a Chinese population of nearly 10,000 in this city, but it is a rare sight to. see any Chinaman applying for help at any of tho publio charitable institu tions of tho city. Our Chineso residents . arc always ready to assist each other in nil the emergencies of life.' Mast of them belong to societies of mutual assistance on the Chinese plan. When one of them is penniless lip can borrow money. When one is out of work lie finds others ready to aid him in procuring it. When one is IH, nurses furnish the needed service, and if he dies the expenses of his burial are always easily obtained. Several hun dreds of‘ thorn have ' beoome well off through tho business of their wash houses, ,Tb*e are no loafers among them, and aU of them ore noted for their industrious lives. There an few of them addicted to tho opium habit, though many of them occasionally indulge in the fames of tho drag. It is mainly the wealthy men among them who enjoy tbo luxury of Chinese wives, bat Others who desire to form white matches find no difficulty in doing so, so far as the procuring of mates is concerned. As a rale, tho children bora of tlieso unions adopt tho American style of lifo.
