I INVENTION AND DISCOVERY. A Ytn'l Bee at plMtlaetlou Detmwfi the Two— NutuMu Instances. Two words which glibly enough (all (mm the lips of tho average man in a cnrelcss sort of indiscrimination as if they were synonymous. Rut there is u vast sea of distinction between them. Liter ally. they are not so widely separated; but they have come to represent two to tally different aspects of human action. To tho writer's thinking, the terms liavo been greatly confused. Columbus hardly discovered America, ho invented it—that is, us to its cognizable existence. Ho studied, figured, applied the laws as lie knew them, and determined that there must l« a continent there, and ho plodded on till ho proved tho fact, and reduced his Invention to practice. Newton discovered the law of gravity, * one might say, without either mental or physical effort. Watt invented tho steam engine and Stephenson invented tho loco motive. They felt and knew the goal was ahead, but how to reach it was tho ques tion which required invention of tho highest order. Eli Whitney saw tho painful and laborious methods of clean ing out cotton and shredding it, intui tively felt it could bo done by machinery, went to work and gave the world ono of his great inventions, tho cotton gin. Howe’s great inspiration to placo tho cyo at tho point of a needle may bo said to liavo been a discovery. It unfolded a picture to his mind prophetic of good to, almost countless millions, hut invention had to bo invoked to givo tho picture life,, and tho sewing machine, in all its beauty, came slowly forth from tho chrysalis of Howe's discovery. Tho irregular latho and tho modem harvester were inven tions; their dim, fndefinablo forms loomed up in tho mists of their inventors’ minds, they felt the impulse of improvement, the valdo of the goal gained, and they went to work and at hut succeeded, and the wood carver and reaping hook lost their usefulness to that extent, The electric telegraph was never dis covered; it was consistently invented. Countless 'devices and methods were de signed, tested, thrown away—to bo after wards revivified, many of them—new appliances and systems laboriously worked out, tho midnight oil unspar ingly sacrificed, until at lost a perfected and practical system and apparatus were given to the world. It is hard to say whether the dynamo was invented or discovered, considering its prototype, tho magneto machine. Tho probabilities are it was an accidental dis covery. Tho arc light was a discovery pure and simple. Electric incandescence was a discovery, but tho incandescent lamp in its commercial form stands forth mono of tho most beautiful examples of man's inventivo faculty. The countless experiments on material, tho bulb, the seal, tho standardizing, the pumps, and all the appliances that, go to provide us wRiT the beautifully glowing luminary, all are ineradicable proofs of invention of the very highest order. Midnight oil and noonday sun, morning’s vigor and even ing’s reposeful ruminations, were nil called into requisition to complete tho work. This is truo invention. The phonograph was originally a dis covery, a happy thought of Edison's, but invention of a high order was necessary to produce tlio beautiful instrument of tho present day. It was like Howe's needle—tho germ was there, but tho ma chine had to bo devised to mako it prac ticable. Tho undulntory telephono was n' discovery, n brilliant ono, but still a dis covery. A happy thought supplied tho missing link hi ah incomplete chain, and when the weld of that link was accom plished tho whole world was enchained in admiration, tho wonderful utility of tho derico was quickly recognized, and tho discoverer reaped a rich harvest. Tho pneumatic process of Bessemer was an invention of high gradoond far reach ing importance, and the Siemens regen erative furnace has proved its equal In merit ns a methodical and logical inven tion beautifully carried out. The inventor secs his goal, and consis tently strives for it. He knows the object is there, and he goes energetically after it, sometimes straight to it, but oftener is many times lost in tho wilderness of deluded fancy. Ho sees a light ahead, sighs relief and darts after it, only to find it a will o’-tho-wisp. Undaunted, ho starts again, only perhaps to meet other and worse misfortunes. But lie struggles on hopefully, and at last reaches tho shrine of hts adoration and is for the timo content. The discoverer walks along calmly toward some goal, or lies on the roadsido meditating, and happening to cost his idle eyes downward, sees a gem spark ling nt his feet, and ho sometimes picks it up and adds it to the galaxy of tho world's diadem, but he os often fails to note tiie scintillations that betoken its preciousness, and spurns it -bock into the deeper dust, to lie unseen and unknown perhaps for ages. Which of these two S romoters of the world’s welfare merits 30 highest praise, it is needless to ask. —Electrical Koview. m YORK & BRUNSWICK.
