A Sad Death.
Mr, C.‘ Churchill, a nephew' of
*Capt;<0hurehlll, President of the
CotqprCss Co., died yesterday of con
gestion of the, lungs, at tho late rcsi-
' dence -of Capt G. J. Hall. His re
mains left this afternoon for Yar
mouth,. Nova Scotia, where ho was
raised. Although among strangors
aad miles from home, ho was not
without friends in his last hours, to
minister to his wants.

RAILWAY MAIL SERVICE.

VT. D. Bancroft, general superin
tendent of tho railway mail service,
in his annual report to the postmas
ter general, shows that on June 30,
1888, tho railway mail service was in
operation upon 143,713 miles of rail
road. Clerks were employed in tho
distribution of mail on 126,310 miles.
On tho same date there were in op
eration 41 inland steamboat lines,
aggregating 5,972 miles, on which
postal clerks were employed. While
in the performance of their duties,
postal clerks on railroads traveled in
crews 12,032,104 miles, and those on
steamboats 1,707,649' miles. While
so traveling they distributed 6,528,
772,0G0 pieces of ordinary mail, and
receipted for, recorded, protected,
and properly distributed 16,001059
registered packages and eases, and
1,103,083 registered sacks. During
the year 12,704 miles of new railroad
servit ‘

crease of 9,701 miles, or 8.32 per cent

ing been 248 accident* to trains upon
which postal clerks vri-rc employed.

52 seriously sad 45 slightly injured.
