'Andrew Fischer, an employs of the
ModTM Railway company, <rn> seated in
the retanda of hi* bungalow and ob-
served two large cobras on the barren
plain immediately in front of the house.
Arming himself with a stout stick, he
proceeded to the spot and' encountered
the snake*. He succeeded in Idllihtf one
of them, while the other,, which bad
been slightly wounded, managed to
esoope. Mr. Fischer hunted about for
the runaway, but could not find it He
then returned to his bungnlowahd rested
for some time, os he was off duty.' Later
in the day ho prepared to go to his work,
and with that object got out his dothes

about to put on hie- shirt when' hh fait

Features of American Handicraft.
Sapidity of execution, not fine
work, is tho distinguishing feature
Of all American handicraft. Ameri-
*can carpenters and wood workers do
.mgrc good work in a given time than
any of their brothers of other lands, but
it does hot have tho faultless neatness of
the product of Chinese and French
artisans. Tho Chinese, for instance,
mako chairs, cabinets and even houses
without the use of a singlo nail, and
every pieco of wood is fitted to its place
with hair line exactness. It is not con
sidered extraordinary in China to spend
three years in tho construction of a
single bedstead.—Chicago Nows.
Tho. Amount of Water Power. •
The American Statistical association
publishes some interesting figures on tho
amount of wiatar power employed in the
United States. In 1880 there was a total
water power equal to 1,929,870 horse
power used for manufacturing purposes,
rid* being 89.0 per cent, of the total
power thus employed in the states. The
annual -value of tho waterpower thus
ut&tehUs aet down at $94,000,000. Tho
New England states alone use 84.fi per
cent, of tho whole water power o( the
oountiy, and altogether the Atlanlio
states use over three-fourths of tho whole.

In ono of the cantons of Switzerland
tho publio educational authorities cele
brate the approach of the wet Season by
providing each of their young scholars
with a pair of Blippere, which the chil
