in urgent haste, to put on garments that

id a coach which suddenly crumbles to
pieoes, and leaves one staring fa the
road. So to speak, it is a marked pecu
liarity of dreams that “the bottom drops
out of everything.» ^
So rebellions are dreams, and so erratio
in their course, that they cannot be com
pelled by any effort of will; wild fire
could be more easily chained. We may
long ardently to see onco more, in “the
wilderness of sleep,” some beloved and
vanished face; yet this poor solace may
bo denied, while alien images crowd into
the brain. Upon this subject Hazlitt
wrote, ‘ ‘I never dream of the face of any
one I am particularly attached to. I have
thought almost to agony of the some park
son for years, nearly without ceasing, eo
aa to have her face always before me, and
to be haunted by u perpetual conscious
ness of disappointed passion, yet I never
in all that time dreamt of that person
more than once or twice, and then not
vividly.” Nor can the lost impression
received by the mind before slumber
overwhelms it be calculated upon; for we
may read of Mother Blood's execution,
and dream, immediately afterward, of a
cabbage garden; or. transversely, wo may
be cradled by ..the most soothing, placid
meditations, yet the wc;rd magician,
who bears tho branch or poppies, will
beckon us to follow through seas of gore.
Experiment has proved that dreams
lay be ^Influenced, if not controlled.

gesta a tempest to the dreamer,, and the
fames of sulphur or the pleasant odors of
aromatic water near his nostrils trans
port him to stxage countries. For this
reason tho noises of awakening life give
color and-movement to the visions that
“hong upon tho edge of day,” rendering
them more real and vivid than those
which come at dead of night.
It is one of th9 peculiarities of dreams
to seem to bo tending toward some stu-
penduous climax, and then to turn away
with utter irrelevance. The dreamer re
mains imperturbable in the face of the
moot astounding transformations; if ani
mals, and even inanimate objects, become
gifted with speech, he is not surprised;

yet ho is

of being pursued, it is not by a lion Or
tiger, but, perhaps, let us say, by an in
distinct yellow blur, hovering near tho
ground like a will-o’-the-wisp—unspeak
ably sinister to his fancy—darting from
thickets, and gliding in and out among
the trees.
It is somewhat disenchanting to realize
that dyspepsia is one of tho prime factors
in dream making. It matters little
whether the conscience bo clear, if the
digestion be not in equally good case.
Most people have experienced the excita
tion, tho supersensitiveness of every
faculty, brought about by n febrile con
dition of the blood—the lightness of head
and limb, extending, as one fancies,
even to the loss of gravity—the strange,
unfamiliar aspect assumed by well known
objects a&rat the room; /or fever, like
indigestion, is a fertile breeder of phan
tasms.—Now Orleans Timei-Democrat.
Oswald Crawford, in The Fortnighly,
has a charming article on “Summer
Time in Rural Portugal." He gives on
account of tho snmval of the fittest in
the noble gardens that are found as relics
and reminders of Moorish taste. He says
that “it humiliates hia national pride to
contemplate the pleasure gardens of Ms
English friends; even to pass by train,
fa summer time, through the land and
see no garden that is any refreshment to
the spirits, save those of the cottagers.”
In other words, the northern garden is
a show place for flowers, but in the
southern garden “flowers of infinitely
less irhportanco than tho / walks,
the shades of branching trees,
tho greenery of leaf and spray,
flio cooling breezes in summer,', tho
warmth of tho sun in winter, and at all
seasons tho golden fretwork that tho
sunlight makes upon the ground through
overhanging boughs.” We are young
in a good many ways; but in the art of
the beautiful wo have most of all to
learn. Such notes as Mr. Crawford
gives us aro especially valuable, not to
England only, but to America. Wo
havo a superabundance of ibow gardens
without a thought of comfort and refresh
ments. The one need of Americans is
