For the benefithfthe initiated we will state that & retort is an oven in which the coal is baked to extract the gas. These retorts re quire a day or two to heat thorough ly. Fire* will be made in them to morrow, and after the present week a great improvement may .be looked ‘ for in the quality of the gas. The trouble heretofore has been that the four retorts in uso were overcrowded to supply the demand. The capaci ty is now almost doubled, and the gas can therefore be made slower and therefore better. 11 herds home to- + >vinjter was fixed meeting by • the Town Council it cbm# to b.e Anile from :the period beyond whioh the memory or man •runneth not, that the Thursday of the week following the return of the cattle from Montank should be ob served as a day of thanksgiving.” At ail early period of New Eng land history-certaid period? of pros perity were often made the occasions of publjic thanksgivings, and often a All Three Dead. Mr. Joo Matthews one of our New castle street fruit dealers,\ gave us a bit of his history yesterday after noon, that savors of romance. He said he had three cousins first sec ond and third, that they lived with him until 1880, when all three died. They kept him poor until that time, since their deaths he has commenced accumulating property. He says their names were firsr cousin “Pres ents,” second cousin “Give away” and third cousin “Free hearted,” with such qousins is it any wonder that Mr. Joe should stay poor. Lot Purchased for the Synagogue We are pleased to know that our Israelitieh friends have secured a lot op which to erect their Synagogue. The one selected, is the lot in front of Mr. Morris Michelson’s residence, extending back to the Academy lot. It Is ono of those trust lots 90x270 feet. We hope soon to see the work of erection of the synagogno began. Home Again. Mr. Cornelius Casey is among ns once more, having accepted a post tion with the E. T. V. & G. pepple as telegraph operator. Mr. Casqr will be remembered as the Brunswick boy who stood by the wires daring-tbe . epidemic of ’76, fhmisbing the only eouimunioation with the - outside world daring that tenriblo period. He line been In tho Savannah offleo for tho past eight years. id into a day of thanksgiving by what seemed an immediate answer to the prayers. Perhaps to recall to our minds that first thanksgiving of the Pilgrim Fathers may put ns to the blush. Often on this day have I heard such remarks as “I have*no thanks to give; I have nothing for which to be thankful,” from lips that it would seem might have had a life’s work in framieg words of praise and gratitude, so blessed were they in the health of themselves and their dear ones, while for some fancied trouble this great good was overlook ed. The New York Sun says that Thomas Nelson Page’s story of “The Two Little Confederates” came near offending a good many northern peo pie because of the unlovely south- side view he took of a couple of fed eral soldiers ransacking a house. The San warns Mr. Page that many peo pie object to having their children entertained with diagreeable pictures of northern soldiers. This is strange stuff to appear in a sensible paper. Mr. Page offended because he put some ofthe truth of history in bis story. The day is coming when mat ters still more offensive to northern readers will be published. The ac tors in the stiring scenes of the war will tell how the invaders of the south tortured old men and women to make them reveal the hiding place of the treasures, applied the torch to the hOmeB of non combatants, and en deavored to persuade the happy and contented slaves to ro-enaot here the scenes of Hayti and San ‘Domingo. All thiB will be rather unlovely read tng, bat it wi)l have to come. The facts of histoiy cannot be suppressed forever.
