A Busy Mail.
One of the busiest men in town is
Mr. H. E. Barnes, the fish and oyster
man. His day’s work extends over
a space of from eighteen to twenty
honrs. About fire o’clock a. m. bis
slumbers are disturbed by the hotel
and restaurant men, who want fish
and oysters for breakfast. When he
gets these off the six o’clock dock
train must be met to fill orders for
the people out there. Next comes
the seven o’clock B. & W. train, foi
lowed by the 8:15 East Tennessee.—
A few minutes for breakfast can
now be fouhd, after which comes the
work of the day, getting in oysters,
looking after boats and hands; and
getting off more fish and oysters on
the noon dock train and 3:15 East
Tennessee, add filling town orders.—
Night finds Mr. Barnes a tired man,
with several hours’ work still before
4 •
him posting books and accounts.
Mr. Barnes has a regular pay-roll
of thirty five, fishing, oystering, open
ing and packing. He says it is im
possible to supply the demand, and
every day mail orders are refused in
order not4o stint the city trade.
Please observe that A. Kaiser &
Bro. have also to-morrow—Wednes
day 21st—a special sale day.
The Procession Last Night.
Tho colored people had a torch
light procession last night in honor
of the Republican victory. The
crowd consisted of men, women and
boys, many carrying flaming torches.
They all oeembd >to enjoy the Am,
'although the rain pattered down.
We were oorry to learn that some
thoughtless boys threw a couple of
brick «t the procession wounding
some of the small bqjrs. Such eon-
duct should he punished if the per
petrators esn be found.
Another Cotton Steamer.
We delight to chronicle tfie arri
val of these cotton steamers, for they
speak volumes for onr port. But a
few years ago the sight of an ocean
steamer at onr docks called .for a
general turning out of the people,
and a Idsit to the Captain and his
vessel by every prominent citizen oi
the town. To-day these Steamers
come and go, and scarely call forth a
comment. This morning we wit
nessed at the same moment two pow
erful steamers coming up to’ our
docks—the steamship State of Texas
of the Mallory line, and the British
steamship Starlight, coming in for
cotton from Mr. Alfred Fatmnn,
one'of our new cotton men. The
Starlight will take 4,500 bales and
will sail for Bremen as soon as
loaded.

The Weather.
’ How soon we tire of rain, and yet
we recognize t!..- fact that it por
tends that which we are all looking
for now so earnestly—cold weather;
something to freeze out the fumes
of fever, anil thus allow all re
strictions to commercial intercourse
removed. The rain set in last night.
Upto this writing—noon—it has only
ceased at intervals. The almanac
makes us say that the weather will
continue bad until after the first ol
December, at which -time we mav
look for stinging cold and frost. The
prospect is not inviting to business,
therefore, for the next two weeks, but
we must grin and bear it in view of
the good'time to come.
Put Into Port.
The steamer Alrato. Capt. Gilbert,
ran into ibis port to-day from stress
of weather outside. The Atrato is a
screw propeller, formerly the “Gen.
Barnes,” of Providence, and is on her
way to Soutli America to run upon a
river of that name. Capt. Gilbert is
somewhat perplexed to find a place
to lay his steamer while waiting on
the weather, as every dock is lined
with vessels, steamers, steamship,
etc.
