It.fa» figure of speech when we
talk aboht the nations changing tho
map of Europo; tho wild spearsmen of
tho Soudan have it in tho hollow of
their hands to alter in fact and deed
the map of Africa. They can, if thoy

Subjects for Industrial Training.
Mrs. Laura Osborne Talbot thup de
scribed to tho Amorioan association
her experiences of tho effects of a little
industrial teaching upon thirty va
grant boys whom sho, with some other
ladies, induced to attend for three
years nn industrial school at Howard
university one morning in the week:
“We Wcro limited in every way, but
lo
wo found-these children of tho lowest
kind wore delighted to work with
tools, and somo of them bavo sot up
little carpenter shops of laoir own,
and support themselves in that way.
Tlio moral uplifting was tho best result
of all, and it is not likely that these
boys will become members of our
criminal class.
‘ ‘Each boy as ho entered tho class was
taught in tho tailor shop to mend his
clothes, and in tho shoo shop to mend
his shoes. Ono
x>v from
tho orphan asylum became so skillful
in shocmaking that ho could not only
mako his own shoes, but could cut up
tho larger, half worn shoes and mako
them over for baby foot. All of this I
term tho best kind of economy, espe
cially in a city liko Washington."—

“Greenland's Icy Mountains.**
“I heard on odd story tht> other day
about Bishop Hebor’s beautiful hymn,
‘From Greenland’s ICy Mountains,”
said a well known Cincinnati tin.
“What is it*’’ “It relates to tho music
for tho hymn. You remember that
Bishop Heber wrote it while in Ceylon
in 1824. About ayeor later it reached
America, and a lady in Charleston,
S. CL was struck with its beauty.
“She could find, however, no tune
that seemed to suit it Sho remem
bered a young bank clerk, Lowell
Mason, afterward so celebrated, who
was just a few steps down the street
and who had a reputation a* a musical
genius. So she sent her son to ask
him to write a tune that would go
with the hymn. In just half on hour
tho boy came back with the music,
and tlio melody dashed off in such
haste fa to this' day sung with that
song.”—Cincinnati Star.
