Tho boy was a bright, cour ageous hid, and wus ambitious to dis tinguish himself with his rifla Early ono niorninr ’ *** ' ** a herd about them up, and picking out u lino bull with good tusks, I started to cut him off, and telling George to ride iiehind while I charged thorn. Boon I had tho old fellow out of tho pack, uud gave him a shot behind tho car that stag gered him a little. Then wo crossed Bred him for half an hour, but could not get any good shots. ’ All at onco tho norso Qcorgo was riding stumbled, throwing him and falling on his leg. I was so,horrified that 1 could not move; but finally, seeing Gcorgo’s at tempts to extricate himself, I tried .to draw the elephant’s attention to ma The brute was thoroughly enraged, however, and charged for the lad iust os he was getting on his feet. Tni followed one of the greatest fights be tween bruto and man I ever saw. Off went George, tho elephant after him, while I followed, firing bullet after bullet into his hide. “All at onco I taw that Wilson was lame. I leveled at once and fired, and the boy turned around and did like wise. This checked tho bruto for n moment, but seeing Georgo running .again ho made u furious charge and caught up with him. Up went his trunk, and a moment after tho poor lad was dead on the ground, crushed by tho blow. Not satisfied, tho bruto began goring tho lad in a frightful manner. I redo up to tho beast and sont in two shots that brought him to his knees. Ho tried to riso, but could .not, and, after two or three shots, rolled over and died. Tho poor lad was torn in pieces. I placed nis body across my horso, chopped off tho beast's - tusks and rodo back to comp. Wo buried him near tho springs and piled rocks over his gravo to keep tho wolves from getting at it I took tho boy’s watch und chain, with his wearing ap parel, to his mother, and I can tell you, lads, I never wish to witness such • a scone again. The poor woman died a year afterward, but would never touch tho profits of tho trip, saying that slio would tako nothing that was tho means of filling her boy.’’ How French Coffeo Is Made. The French have tho reputation of making tho best coffee. Their method is very different from the American method. They tako a greet deal of care in making this favorite beverage, and the result is that when French coffee . is taken ono drinks tho pure flavor of tho berry. They always grind the berries just before they nro to be used, and ao not let a quantity of ground coffee stand and get stale. Tho French cook then pours boiling water on tho ground coffee; then sho filters this, nnd, after boiling tho water again, pours it on tho coffee oaeo more. This is repeated a third time. Sho never boils the coffeo and water together, nor puts tho coffeo in cold wuter und then let it boil. Tho French do not know how to moko good tea* but they givo this recipe ns the proper way to nmkd tea: Pour boil ing water oti tho leaves and then turn it out of t ho pot. Then pour one-third of the water required, and placo tho pot over a steaminguppanatus in order to let it draw wfthout boiling. After a whilo add another third, and then the last think In this way tho full flavor and strength of tho tea is ob tained.—Now York Mail and Express. Chinese Dogears. A writor in a Shanghai journal, re ferring to the beggars of Chino, says that largo donations ore given to them by tho people, but these are in tho na ture of on insurance. In tho cities the beggars are organized into very pow erful guilds, more powerful by far than any organization with which they can Jiavo to contend, for tho beg gars have nothing to loso and nothing to feut^ in which respects thoy stand alone. Tho shop keeper who should refuso a donation to a stalwart beggar, after the latter had waited for a rea sonable tiiuo and has besought with what tho lawyers call “duo diligence," would bo hublo to invasion trow u hordo of famished wretches, who would render tho.oxisteuco even of u stolid Chinese a burden, and who would utterly prevent tho transaction of any business until their coutinually rising demands should bo met. Both tho shop keepers and tho beggars un derstand this perfectly well, and it is for this reason that tho gifts Cow in a steady, if tiny, rill.—Loudon Times. Dealing of Wounds.
