To obtain fin by this method apiece of steel, sudh as a file or msp, was struck with a flint, ora bitof white quarts from a granite ledge, and -spark was caught in tindep—clui cotton rags. The old flint lock mod- ket, with, afewfrmlriaof powderand in the pan, was looked some tinder upon by our grandmothers as a dc> znestic utensiL Sometimes, on a dear day, a burning glass—a lens for col lecting at one point the rays of the uh—was'uoed. Tho-method of' producing fire b nibbing together Wo dry sticks i known to most boys, butit has not been often adopted by civilized people. It belongs to the ruder conditions of life. w • In Thibet Capt William Oul found practiced a more scientific method than any of these. The natives strike a light by 'compressed air. Tho of>- paratus used consists of a wooden cylinders two and a half inches long by ttyee-quartera of an inch diameter. This is closed at one end, the base be ing about the size of a quill pen: an air tight piston fits into this with large, flat knob at tho top. Tho other end of the piston is slightly hollowed oat and a very small piece of tinder is placed in the cup thus formed. To use this the cylinder is. held In one hand, the piiton inserted and 'about half way down. Avery pushedal sharp blow is then given with the palm of the hand on the top of the knob. The hand must at tho same time closo on tho knob and instantly withdraw the piston, when tho tinder will bo found alight. It requires skill to use the apparatus as well os science to in t lt—Youth’s vent i i Companion. An Improved FtTo Escape. A portable firo escape, constructed with three systems of lazy tongs con nected' together and arranged to be elevated and lowered by a screw mounted in the platform of a truck, . hase been patented by Mr. Louis P. Sooty, Of Clements, Kan. The plat form on which the tongs ore mounted has screws at its comers, whereby the escape may be held upright or tipped against the walls of'a building. The tongs are united by a series or trian gles, a set of lazy tongs being arranged at each comer of the triangle, each set bracing the others. A screw for ele vating the system is mounted in the center of the platform, a triangular plate being attached at its qpraers to the lowermost set of lazy tongs, and having at its center an internally screw threaded boss in which the screw works, being operated by beveled gears and crank shafts extending to the ends of the track. By turning the cranks the three sets of lazy tongs will be rapidly elevated and by reversing tile motion as rapidly lowered. At the top of the lazy tongs is a platform or cage on which persons may step from the window of a building, and be lowered to tho ground by turning the cranks, or they may descend by a rope ladder suspended from an aper ture in the center of the cage.—Scien tific American.
