v Onr Christmas.
The life of an editor like that of
most other men, has its bright side
as well as its dark. Once in a while
the long line of wearisome hunting
fbr something to please the hungry
literary appetites of his readers, and
the never foiling supply of fault-find
ings and blesBings(?) are varied by
little Christmas and New Year epi
sodes that vary the monotony, and
‘Show that we are not altogether with
out remembrance. Such our Christ
mas has proven, kind friends have
remembered us, and we hereby ex
tend to them our hearty thanks for
kind remembrances.
Messrs. Bnumgartner Bros., sent
us in as a foundation for our Christ
mas dinner a large turkey. Mrs.
Charley Baumgartner sweetened it
up with a delicious mince pie of her
own make.
Mr. C. L. Elliot, the popular gro
cer, wishing us to obey the scripture
injanotion, “Take a little wine for
thy stomach sake,” sent in a bot
tle of pure scyppernong wine.
Friend Glogauer completed th e
layout with a box of flue cigars. As
we enjoyed these luxuries, we'could
but Swish that these good people
should always enjoy all of good that
earth has to offer. r May they live to
enjoy many happy rotnrns. of this,
our annual jubilee.

it was Christmas we 'found every
thing in fall blast, .and running up
to faU capacity—In foot, the press is
nqwrifoning day and night.
To give Air readers an Idea of the
power of,.,the, pressi wehgvebnt to
say that two bales, from which the
bands', bad -been cu^ were ‘placed ob
.the bed of the press, one on top of
theother.and measuring four feet fa
bright v At the signal from the so-'
perintendent in charge, Mr. H. C.
Conrvoisie, the pumps were set, sHjq
work, and up cape, the bed mntil It
was within lity.inches ofthe platen.
There it stopped, and the two bales
were banded in one, .being smaller by
several inches than a single bald from
an ordinary compress—for, he it re
membered that these bales bad been
already once compressed elsewhere.
The machinery used in riveting the
bales, so that they shall not expand
at all, was out of gear, so that iwe
did not witness that part of the pro
cess. This double bale, then; When
taken out of the press, expanded to
about the dimensions of a single bale
compressed in the ordinary way. We
saw yesterday a single bale which
had already been compressed in the
interior reduced to five inches*

Committee ])fa Confer.
A telegram from U. S. Engineer,
Lieutenant Carter, states that be
osn’t come to Brunswick just now,
'but advises a committed of confer
ence there. In response Messrs. J.
E. Dart, J. U. Madden, and W. F.
Pennlman, will go at ones to Savan
nah to confer with him touching the

THE POWER USED.
The power used to secure these re
sults is four double hydraulic pumps,
which force water into a chamber of
the press, causing the bed to rise.—
This water passes back into a reser
voir, and is used over and oveiragain.
the CAPAcrrr.
The hands are all new and not ac
customed to this kind of work, but
even with this drawback Mr. Cour
voisie informs us that he can com
press about 40 bales to the hour, or
1,000 in a day and night. Tbe steam
er Bedford iB now at the dock load
ing with this cotton, and will take on
board, several hundred bales more
than she took on at Norfolk recently,
where is located the next best com
press in this country. -TheBelden
cotton compress is a grand success,
and we rejoice to know that it is lo
cated at the port of Brunswick, thus
giving us the eclat of having the big
gest press in the world.
Pelicanville.
This is the name of a new subur
ban village contiguous to this city,
located on the first high ground out
from the E. T. V. G. docks, hereto
fore the home of Capt. G. J. Hall,
who once had charge of the docEs.
Then there were but one or two
houses there, bulsiaco the erection
of a cotton compress at that point a
marked change has come over the
scene, and already there are two
stores and five or six residences. Lots
are in demand, and in course of time
there will be many more stores and
residences for tbe volumoof business
at this point is increasing.

Accidental Killing.
Robt Tanner was accidentally
shot and killed yesterday by his
friend Charloy Simms—both colored
men. It seems they were both to
gether inspecting Bristol which
Simms took from his pocket. In re
volving the cylinder with the ham
mer down, the pistol went off aad
Tanner received the bullet in his ab
domen, which resulted in his death
in a short while. *
The coroner’s jury rendered a ver
dict of accidental killing—Tanner
having stated before dying that, it
was purely accidental on the part of
his friend. Meanwhile, however, a
warrant has been issued for Simms
for carrying concealed weapons. He
is now in jkil.
