James Club died at his home in the upper portion of the city this morning, after a protracted illness. Captain Club was one of the land marks of this city, having lived here from his early boyhood. For many years he was pilot on Lit is bar, and in latter years Captain of different steamboats plying in these waters. His last command was the Cracker Boy, plying between this city and the Satilla river. He was genial in his manners, and numbered his friends by the scores whenever the Cracker Boy’s whistle was heard. Public Meeting to DIhcuim Bonds, Sewerage ami Schools. A number of other speakers will address the meeting. By order of M. Ullman, Chairman J. L. Beach, Seet’y. Manual Training in the Public Schools. The idea is gr dually taking pos session of tho pie that the public school system of this country, whi it gives a very fair literary education to the young, is not altogether pe]} feet. This idea, in the concrete, so far as it has developed in Georgia, is represented by the State school of technology in this city, and by the supplemental training schools at the State university and at Emory col- Burglnrs Again. Mr. John Hncncl comes in for an other visit from the burglars. They seem to like ids goods. We arc glad lo state, however, tlint they only got one pistol this time. Dr. Bishop who occupies the adjoining room heard them and caused them to leave without getting as much as tbev wanted. During the (pst three autumn months England imported nearly 33.000. 000 bushels of wheat, against 23.000. 000 during the same time the 3’ear before. Of this larger'quantity the United States furnished much less than one sixth; of the smaller nearly one half. This tremendous falling off in American trade, due to the speculative movements in Chi cago led by “Old Hutch,” accounts in large measure for the fact, dis quieting to some people, that the balance of trade is on the wrong side. Fou Sale: Several horses and mules. Also 500 cords of wood. Ap ply to J. R. Minchan. The public school is good as far as it goes, but a merely literary course, and by no means a perfect one, fails tq^Jhe youth, of. the land to-make their way in the world. The whole object and aim of the public school system is to fit the }’oung people of the country for life—to aid in niak them good citizens and useful members of the community. There is no better citizen than an - industrious one—no better educated citizen than the one who possesses at once the impulse of industry and the knowledge and skill nocossary to direct it iu the proper channel. This matter is attracting attention in all the large educational centers, and it may very properly be dis cussed here in Georgia, where the interest in public education is as large and as serious as it is in any part of the country.—Atlanta Con stitulion. New Year Resolutions. The following set of resolutions is respectfully submitted to the young men, and others in our city, who are determined to do better all this year than last: Resolved, That in consideration of the fact that I have uot lived a per fectly sober and very industrious life during the past year, I will abstain from drink during this year and stick close to business. Resolved, That from and after this date, feeling, as I do that it is not considered gentlemanly to swear, that I will during this year refrain from swearing. Resolved, That I will resist every influence brought to bear upon me to make me break these resolutions. Resolved, That I consider that it is my duty this year to make a more ll decent appearance in society than I * have for the past year, by devoting the money that I would spend for liquor to buying decent clothing.— Exchange.
