The ruins of this region, like mbst
others of the extreme west and south,
are the remnants in a great measure
of Btono structures. It is evident,
however, that a great portion of the
villages apd dwellings of the lowlands
which comprise this district have been
of material other than stone, fre

adobe combined. * *

hundreds of feet up the most precipi

modem look than the valley and cave
remains, and are probably in general
more recent belonging rather to the
close than to the earlier parts of along

It teems probable that u rich reward
awaits the fortunate archaeologist who
shall bo able to thoroughly investi
gate tho historical records that lie
buried in the masses of ruins, the un

burial places of the northwest. But it
is quite improbable that any .certain

of tliis curious race which has just

It Was a Joke,
'Saloon Keeper Michael McHugh, of
<558 Washington avenue, Brooklyn,
received a small package from a boy,
who suid ho was asked to deliver it to
him by a mart who met him near the
saloon. On opening the package Mr.
McHugh discovered a dgar box with
a sliding lid. Suspecting that it was
on infernal machine, ho laid the box
aside without attempting to move the
lid. Francis Stone, a young customer,
however, picked up the box and gent
ly moved the lid. As he did so there
was a sputtering of exploding matches
in tho interior, but nothing more ter*
riblo than this occurred. There were
pieces of brokon glass, cotton waste
and what seemed to be powder In the
box, and also a small vial filled with
some black subtfanoe, having a my*
