We are safe in saving that there isn’t 50 children in the county who receive any benefit from this fund yearly. How is this? Every man must pray his poll tax, yet the money slides away and everybody seems ignorant of its departure. There is o;p thing absolutely wrong in the whole matter, i. e., we. never coiild see why this money must go round by At lanta. Is this done to have an opportu nity for stealage, or is it necessary ? 1 The Toiague. One of the most troublesome things in this world is the human tounge. It is true that people not only talk about what they should n©t, but there is too much talk. I was taught that it is impolite to speak out and interrupt another person while that person is speaking, and I ex pect it was once a rule of society for one person to speak at a time. It would be much more pleasant if we could have such a rule now. How often do we see a crowd of ten or twelve, all talking at once. ■>f I was.-oneo intimately acquainted with a man who professed to be a skeptic. On one occasion after a long private talk with him I asked him whether he really spoke his sentiments when he professed to disbelieve in the inspiration of the BiK'e. His reply Vas this : “Whenever you hear a man say that he does not be lieve the Bible to be the word of God, tell him that I say he is a liar, for he has to believe something, and they? 1C 4- • rv-LviicveT’ I think there is something in the idea. In In diana there is not, 1 believe, any doubt of the success of Mr.Voprlpees, 1 am sure there should be none. Last night Representative Bleicher, of Texas, died in this city, haing the fourth member of tbe House since it met in De cember. Mr. 8. had many agreeable personal qualities, and, unlike the mem bers whose deaths preceded his, had been elected, to the doth Congress. He acted generally with the Democrats, on politi cal questions, but led those who dissent- ed from the party programme as to a re duction of the army, and to him more than to any other Representative, is due the fact that material reductions were not made by the 44th and 45th Congresses* Mr. Hartridge* of Georgia, who diqd a few days since, had already aeludred, a considerable reputation fn Congress, then-h a cc ii The Yellow iW- noVv ' : at Ncv, Orleans, will report to Congress at this session and "probably at an caily tiay us conclusions as, to the cause and treatment of the disease. Some of its members have examined and commended a plan of Prof. Gowgee, of London, now here, to “freeze out” the disease. The Professor proposes to board any vessel coming from a dangerous port, and in a few minutes, while the clothing of the passengers is being disinfected, to reduce the temperature of the vessel so much as to destroy any germs of the disease. He will operate in the same way on a dwel ling house. Anything which promises protection from the fearful pestilence is worthy of trial, and-this plan seems to have made friend* enough already among scientific men to show that it has merit. After two days of somewhat stormy discussion, the woman suffrage conven tion adjourned last night. Many of the principal members will remain here sev eral days to use their influence upon Congress for the furtherance of the cause. Don. It would cost y r cu at least three dollars a y T ear to write them a letter every week, not counting your time and trouble anything, and the Gazette gives mere interesting local news in one issue than you would probably think of in a year.
