Farm and Home. Stopping And Preventing washing. We have often recommenbecl leaving unplowed strips run on a level through cultivated land at the usual distance apart of hillside ditches as a means of preventing washing. The longer we have tried it the better we are pleased with the plan,A modification of it which economizes land is after flushing a field broadcast to lay off narrow lands say 10 or 12 feet wide on a level and sow them clo*vn in either oats, grass or clover. As the rows will be run by these strips there will he no turning on them and conse quently no injury to oats or grass. These strips soon become so filled with roots and vegetable growth as to stop all •washing of consequence. They also form conveneient wagon ways for hauling cot ;6w*during picking season, tig tc/bere gullies already exist they can be readily filled provided the row's are run on a level so as to discharge no wa ter into them. Plow the borders and edges, but not the bottoms, of the gulley so that some loose dirt may be present to wash down gradually into the bottom This done, weeds, grass etc, wiil soon spring up and bold all the dirt wnich fills into them. SprsMgOats, The early sown the better. At this seasson it is well to cover thi seed toler able deep to guard against freezes. An other point which should never be for gotten is that the shorter the time a crop bad to grow and mature in the more free ly it should be sup ply ed with food. The later oats are sown the more heavily they should be manured. Gotten seed and a little phosphate or a little cotton seed alono is excellent for this crop—2o to 50, or more bushels per acre. We know of no better use that can be made of cotton seed than to apply t hem to oats for be it know’ll that it the oats fail it will be known by the middle of June, and the land can be utilized at once in a late corn or pea crop or in sweet potatoes or mil lit. Sow r down largely your hard run cotton fields—they need badly tli rest accumulation an oat crop would give and they need the stopping of wash es begun here and there. Harrowing'drain iia Spring’. This is growing in popular favor, It is equivalent to a working—stirs the soil and kills the young weeds which arc ready to spring fonvard and dispute pos sessions of the ground with the grain crop. It should be done with a light bar row with teeth sloping backwards select ing a time when the ground is in good plowing order. r I lie first harrowing must he given as soon as a distinct spring growth commenced and one or aftei wards at intervals ot 10 days or two weeks. At first one who had never tried it before would think he bad ruined bis grain but it soon straightens up again and grows all the faster. If a top-dress ing is to be given broadcast it before harrowing 72 pounds, nitrate soda per acre will greatly improve a crop. Depth to Fist Manure This depends on nature of manure and nature of soil. It the former is al rerdv in condition to he absorbed by plants requiring no further decomposition or change—as the ease with commeicia fertililers —it may be placed within an inch of the depth to wcich the soil is broken especially if the soil is stiff and not lead y. If, however, the manure is corse and only partially decayed and re quires the action of air to make it avail able then the nearer the surface it can be placed without evaporation the bet ter especially if the soil is loose and san dv and the ten loncy of manure to sink in it. In our dry climate other things be ing equal the deeper manure is put the better. Motto for poultry shows—“ Fair is and fowl is fair.” will kill me,” as the musi cal African remarked on the gallows.” I “I like to make sponge cake,” said she innocently, “it makes my hands so clean.” 'I lie undertaker is a very thrifty man ? 1 ways.
