' Farm and Home. " TSic Outlook. There is now ns lit fie reason to doubt | that a substantial revival of trade has taken place, and that the prospects for the future is blight, as there was five . years ago to apprehend a long and gloo j my period of constantly deepening dc look has Imp oved at all points, or that 1 all department.; of trade find themselves .today than they were three months ago. There are exceptions, and probably mi ni *rous exceptions but, the fact remains i hat in several of the leading industries a a cry decided improvement is apparent. ® A Id to this that the branches ot trade which are now most promising are pre cisely those which either induce activity ii subordinate or allied branches, or else 1 are those which indicate general prosper ity or the reverse, and the significance u of the present situation can be fully cun £ prehended. ( Among the. departments of trade in >: which a change for the may be < noted arc, in tlie first place, the great m ; dustiies of New England, cotton goods v and boots and shoes. There is less to be said of the latter than of the former, yet lit is,the general testimony that the pros -1 pect has improved. There is unwonted ( activity in the shoe towns, the shipment..', have increased, the demand is still good considering tbe'season, and the condition of the manufacturing trade lias improved the market for leather. The change in cotton goods is more marked, Prices have advanced, and are still firm both plain and colored goods. Stocks on hand have been cleared off; the demand has been more active than it has been for a long time past. In fact, everything points to much better times for this trade. Not of the least importance is tlio continued in crease in foreign shipments, which arc iroin both New Ycrk and Poston, fiom one-third to two-thirds larger than last year. r i he exports from New York last week included a shipment < f more than *.500 bales to China, and the whole vaJue o( tlie exports lor the week was about half a million dollars. Goods musi have been made expressly for the China trader and there is no reason to doubt that they gave a profit to the manufac turers and shippers. Another trade that jd feeling the impulse of new li.'e is that in iron. The makers of iron in all the districts have advanced [trices, and hold firm. The demand is better than would have seemed | ossibk) a few months ago. Not that there is anything feverish m the condition ot the business, but i. lias had a reasonable and healthy revival, and nothing indicates that it is likely to lose what has beyn gained. These are all leading industiies, and they cannot belong in a prosperous con dition without inducing prosperityin oth er branches. And, indee l, the fact that a j season of general prosperity lias begun s is imlieated in a very conclusive way by j the returns of railroad earnings, Kxeept ' ing a lew roads in tlie North-west ;:ff<. ct I e<; by the disaster to last year's crop just 1 < lore the harvest, there has been a goo< j i; crearo of earnings. The stock market shows how the public look u]_ on the prj - I pects of the railroad interest, and it is ev- I ideiit to everybody that sn augmenta ,j tioii ol traffic can only come from an in-- p creased husines ac i-. iry.
