Farm and Home.
I oh.string' as Manure.
1 f Chemistry: A large num
bei of farmers are unable to understand
bow it is possible to better the condi
tion of lands bytpldligbing in clover, rye,
buck wheat, etc., 1 in a green condition.
"The difficulty is in comprehending metli
otls by wiiieh crorn that>re s mippos(‘d to
draw their sustenance from tlie soil in
'which they glow can return anything
more to the soil than they take away in
their growth. The point is cleared up
when it is known that all pint s draw
nourishment from the atmosphere as well
as from the soil, and this is one source
of gain. While the leaves are accumu
lating stores of fertility Tom the air,
the roots are busy searching for it in b e
soil, and thus the two distinct parts of
plants work together, it is i .1 •
that eroj absorb hi some w: ■ ib <• • n
irom the atmosphere; at least it r ,
never been satisfactorily .proved that
they do not, and hence from that soince
one ot the m ist valuable of the various
forms of plant food may be derived. If
this point is in doubt, it is certain that
the lea ves gather from the atmosphere
the elements.of organic matter, and or
ganize them so as to form the great body
of the planb; and when we turn under
the clover it leaves its organic matter in
the soil; this is, in an important sense,
manure.
—a* •
But the e\cellcift 'effects of plowing
under clover or other green crops are not
due alone to the elements of fertility ob
tained irom air. The great dc£t> pene
trating roots go to a point lower than
most of the cereals, and hence they draw
supplies oi mineral food from sources in
accessible to other valuable plants ; and
further, it is to be observed tlmt these
roots of coarse texture disintegrate and
loosen the soil, so that ail is let in, and
in some
formed by them. When these roots de
cay, they form a considerable portion of
organic or vegetable matter, which,com
bined with the mineral, gives a good com
.post for better-plants to thrive in.
Irom these brief Considerations it will
readily be seen how it is possible to ma
nure land by plowing in green or tps-; and
avc will here remark that it is a practice
not often followed by our husbandmen.
The clover is perhaps the best of all the
plants for green manuring,’and it is eas
ily and cheaply raised. A thin dressing
of super-phosphate (home made) will al
most give a heavy crop of clover on com
mon land, and this civp turned under,
when at its maturity and allowed to de
cay, brings it into .good tilth, and cei -
tainly affords to the farmer a wide mar
gin for profit in successive crops.
Ifes*ah*ing
Those who l ; v£ in tlie 'country often
it nil it difficult to have small articles of
tin-ware repaired when necessary, and
are frequently put t<> great inconvenience
through long delays. Tut a little experi
ence will soon teach them to be quite c
pert in mending for themselves. With a
sharp knife scrape all about the hole or
leak until it beeontes bright as new tin.
The soldier will then readily adhere.
pi inkling on a little powdered ros n
heat the Soldering-iron—vvhicli no fam

rosin to melt it. Do not have the iron so
hot that the rosin eV solder will adhere,
to the iron. If one he's no soldering-iron,
heat any smooth piece of iron (the knob
on 11 <3 top of a shovel or poker will an
swer), or hold ft lighted candle under the
spot, after sprinkling the rosin on top
and t ]> e work can ifii accomplished But,
having once felt the need of a soldering
iron, or learned how easy it is to make
j inch repairs, no housekeeper will be long
without one.
How to Choose A plow.—Plows fre
quently annoy those who use them in a
most mysterious manner. They refuse to
run evenly in the ground and refuse to
keep to the land as they ought to do.
On examining them nothing seems to be

Excellent process.’’— 7>r. Watt,
All consumptive patients are earnestly invited to
give Willson’b Carbolated Cod Liver Oil a fair trial.
It is easily and readily digested where all similar
preparations'are refused by the stomach, and 'ni
ne ediately enters into iho circulation, acting spe
cifically upon the decuying lungs. The nutritious
properties of the oil sustain and build up the sys
tem, while the active curative properties of the
preparation complete the work oflieaiing.
Willson’s Carbolated (Norwegian)Cod Liver Oil
never gets rancid, is froo from unpleasant taste, is
retained easily by the weakest stomach and is sold
at the price ol the ordinary Oils.
