told that he lied about his circulation,
was on tne fence as a politician, and
that he didn’t know anything about
publishing a paper; and wlren men

Smiled a sad smile and wished that
mankind wouldn’t gee excited. During
a religious revival being carried on at

it frequently happened that religious peo

One day a minister came in, and after
talking awhile proposed prayer. He was
in the act of kneeling, when his foot
struck one of the outside forms, which
was leaning against the leg of the stone,
ready to he lifted up, and over it went
making a bushel ot pi. Burr looked at
the ruin wrought, thought of the two

The Comets of Old.
Anew comet is coming—sit down,
sit down, what’s the use of getting ex
cited ? It is only visible from the second
peak of mount Aytchimboguand-ilahas
ti in central Asia, only there with a
three story telescope, and then it is on
ly visible twenty minutes at midnight
and, not then unless the atmosphere is
exactly light, and when it is visible it
only lookslike a star about ball the size
of the little one in Job’s coffin, By all
the stairy worlds that swing in space,
when “we” were a boy the comet used
to come around every summer, with
heads on them like fire balloons, and tails
stretched from the big dipper to the
southern cross, and wagged hack and
forth like a bewildered torchlight proces
sion, and came so close to the earth that
they put the moon out. Out on these sin
gle-barrelled comets, three for a quai
ter, that they get tor us in these degencr
ate modern days . We wouldn’t walk
from here to Asia to see a hundred of

It does one’s heart good to see a mer
ry round-faced farmer. So independ
ant and yet so free from vanity and
pride, so rich and yet so industrious, so
patient and persevering in his calling,
and yet so kind, sociable and obliging,
There are a thousand noble traits about
his charrcter, He is generally hospita
ble. Eat and drink with him and be
won’t set a mark on you, and sweat it
out of you double compound interest;
some people I know will; you are wel
come He will do you a kindness without
expecting a compensation—lt is not so
with everybody. He is honest, and
lesss disposed to deal in low cunning
than any man I could name. He gives
to society its best support, its firmest
t pillar that suppprts the* edifice of gov
ernment,, He is the lord of nature.
Look at him in his homespun and gray,
laugh at him if von will, but behove he
can laugh back if ae plesses.—[ Lx.

of the gorge, it is carefully stated that
the steaks weighed half a pound each.

Bronchitis, Asthma,
and Consumption.
Tlic reputation it lias attained, in consequence of
the marvellous cures it has produced during the
last half century, is a sufficient assurance to the
public that it will cont inue to realize the happiest
results that can be desired. In almost every
section of country there are persons, publicly
known,whohave been restored from alarmmgaml
even desperate diseases of the lungs, by its use.
All who have tried it, acknowledge its superiority;
.and where its virtues are known, no one hesitates
as to what medicine to employ to relieve the dis
tress and suffering peculiar to pulmonary affec
tions. CiiKunv Pectoral always affords in
stant relief, and perforins rapid cures of the
milder varieties of bronchial disorder, as well as
the more formidable diseases of the lungs.
Asa safeguard to children, amid the distress
ing diseases which beset the Throat and Chest of
Childhood, it is invaluable; for, by its timely use.
multitudes are rescued and restored to health.
This medicine gains friends at every trial, as
the cures it is constantly producing are too re
markable to be forgotten. No family should ho
without it, and those who have once used it
never will.
Eminent Physicians throughout the country
prescribe it, and Clergymen often recommend it
from their knowledge of its effects.

ANOINTING TFTE HEAT).
Au Old Custom to lo Ucvivnd.
Tho anointing ot the head and heard
with perfumed oils was tor centuries a
mark of hospitality among the Greeks and
Homans, and in some instances the most
expensive oils were used for that purpose.
Guests and travelers had their hair an
ointed with olive oil, spikenard, myrrh,
or other preparations, and no doubt an
agreeable perfume pervaded the apartment
when the hair dressing operation was com
pleted. To this day it is common in the
East for travelers to have their heads and
beards anointed with olive oil, and this cus
tom will undoubtedly be revived in tho
West —even in the Far West —when the
virtues of Carbgi.ixio are fully known and
appreciated. It not only has desirable
qualities as a hair dressing, but in its re
markable virtues as a hair restorer it lar
exceeds the spikenard or the myrrh ot the
ancients. It is nowhere recorded that the
baldheaded Greeks and Homans had their
shining pates covered with a luxuriant
growth* of hair by the use of the oils com
mon among them, but it is demonstrate<L|
that Car'domxe does work such wonders,
and in reviving the ancient custom ot an
ointing the heads ot those who visit us, or
