Dade County Gazette. RISJXG KAWX, (iKOIJIiIA. Tlil RSMI , Ail#., 21 JS/0- Valedictory. Time, wiith one (ell swoop of hi* Jong hoarv pinions sweeps the dinry iirelics of this world, :aud brings about eireumstnii cos which compel men to act, lie is the conqueror whom men obey, ami when compared wttbli him even years in their might seem like atoms in the sun’s broad rays, jor lie sweeps them all in his majestic HigJ.it, scattering them from his plum*-* like *.Li;ojs ot spray as the ocean easts t lie w ater in its scornful play from its blue bosofliu:. Floating unpreeeptible 1 0; "Sight, *Le diffuses life and death. S'\vilt stars shoot round in their rapid flight, dropping like gems from in id - nights blue profound, sweeps on through vast eternity, and each Mazing sphere in its course revolves; the sunny stream gioes singing on to the sea, and the blue waves upon the Imaeli dissolves like wo mans hopes, and manhoods height re solves, yet time unwearied and sublime m> busy painting ou the canvass of years the changes wrought# by his ruthless band. Upon the broad bosom of his dus ky hearse he is healing pale millions to the eternal shores and through the dim pathway of midnights lonely hour, he touches the young and beautiful am! thev die. He touches the commercial world and it Hux nates and hoars marks of his ravages, he lays his baud on some pet enterprise ol ours and by force of circumstances we are compelled to change our purposes. j One year ago we were busy collecting i together material to establish in this I county a paper to he known as the (I a -7l'.tt k, and now we arc just as busv pre- j paring to surrender it to other manage-' ment. \\ e now have tlie proud satis (action to know that we did establish it, and in a measure run it successfully. W bile it is true we labored under many disadvantages, yet we kept the concern out of debt, and leave it in good shape lor our sticessor. Our intercourse with the people of Dade lias in the main been pleasant, and to those who gave us en couragement in word, action, and “kale seed” we are under everlasting obliga tions. e take our leave of the comity hop lu that the O azkttrmay receive an un stinted support, and feel that under the management of T. and . Lumpkin, it will in a hold and fearless manner defend the right and condemn the wrong, Hrothcr L. is no stranger to you, and we bespeak for him a liberal support. We* do hope that the enterprising citizens of Dade, will foster and cherish the enterprise in the county. To onr successor ve turn j oyer all unfinished business, he is to till out all our subscriptions and advertising so that by our move no one will loose a cent. binally brethren farewell and to you we will give it strictly ml charge to sup port your county paper, by every word and work. Salutatory, Wo are frequently by the force of eir i. instances caused to act otherwise than no would, if these contingencies did not arise. So the acts of one person not un frequently causes others to act. So bv the purchase of the Jasper ileral'd, Tv the former editor of the Gazette, and/ liis removal to Jasper to take charge of the Herald office, necessitated a change in the editoiial department of this (►dice. In taking charge of t lie Gazette, Ido it knowing at the same time, that hut few men are able within them reives to publish a newspaper that will meet the aprobation of every one. My aim will be to make the Gazette a first class county paper, full of choice reading and, the latest news, such that fhe most fastidious would not for a moment hesitate to advise their children to reuTl. ft will be devoted to the interests of tlie county, and as a watchman upon tlib tower, will call attention to what in the opinion of the editor will be of greatest interest, to the people. Politically thU paper will evei be found battling for the time honored principal*' af I hmioeraey. \\ e propw.v for the paper to speak foi itself, and feel confident that it will de serve. the libci.il patronage of the people. We know that it is almost impossible to run a paper, successfully, without the co-operation of tlm people in the Commu nity iu which it is published, htit waferl Confident that it will receive that liberal p'atronngc, which wo conceive MmftM be* extended t • all home eaten rises, the fos tering of which adds materially to the wealth of tlie country. While the Cazktti: is secular, still in tone and character, it will be moral. We have reduced tin? .subscription price, to one dodai per annum, hoping thereby to place i:. within ca?y reach ot the people, x. <C ♦ Wnshik £f ft LdUi*. Senator Thurman arrived in the city, yesterday, and left for Deer Dark, at which place he will prepare, a speech which he will deliver in Dliio tin* latter end of the present month.- lie says, be ••vi! 1 make speeches through the whole campaign if his health trill permit, lie believes Ewing will be and ought to he elected. No man in tho country has a dearer head than Senator Thurman and lu* will have great weight in Ohio. He has for three years carried more influ ence in Congress than any other mail. I'ho N V. Tribune is always unfair. It was as munch so when training with the “reforms” as, few years ago, treat ing its opponents then as unfairly as it now does the democratic and conserva- | tivo people of thf country. The latest exhibition of its meanness is fyund in a continued arraigment of the present I km* ocratic, ( 'ongress for passing a law by i which payments to soldiers of the late volunteer army a.e delayed in each ease : for a year or so. The truth is that a Democratic ( ongress did nothing of the ♦ kind. The bn*# on the subject is now just what it has been, for many years. It is a law passed by a radical Congress and John Sherman is its Senatorial fatoe.r. Until the same Sherman became Secy, this particular law has been bold not to apply to soldiers. When, llayes Sherman and the other soldier loving pa triots came in, 1577, they, by a strained construction of the law, made it apply the small claims of soldiers and the wid ows and orphans of soldiers. What, Hentwell was not small enough to do, Sherman did. The quarrel of the vol unteer soldiers, if they have any, is not with a Democratic Congress, hut with a radical Secretary. (>ne of the leading morning papers here says that attorney gen. Deven.s has his eye on the United Stale Senatorship as successor of Mr. Davis, which is not the ease, as it is well know that judge Devens would last winter have taken tin* appointment of judge of tin* New England Circuit as successor to the late Judge Simpler, had he not thought there was a strong probability of a vacancy at an early day on the United State Supreme Court bench, on. account of the, greatly advanced age of Mr. Justice <' lit ort which .fudge Devon dmjMiess hopes may com pel him to go on the letired, list before Mr. Haves term of office expires. The friends of the distinguished senior Jus tice throghout e utry will be glad to learn that his health was novel better than, at this time, and that lie gives promise, of many years of service in the position which lie so much honors and adorns.
