A Woiidn’iiil Work*
An, American engineer, who, being en
gaged in the construction of a railway in
(’liiua, has had unusually favorable op
portunities of examining the “(neat
Wall” built to obstruct the incursions of
tin 1 'Tartars, gives the following account
of this wonderful work. The wall is
1,7-Kmiies long, eighteen feet wide and
fifteen feet thick at i the top. The foun
d 1 1 ion throughout is of solid granite, the
lemuiuder ol compact, masonry. At in
tervals of between ‘JT) and 8.00 yaids
towers rise up, t venty-tive to thirty feet
high and twenty-four feet in diameter.
()u the top of walks and both sides of it
are masonry parapets to enable the de
fenders to pass’unseen from one tower to
another. The wall itself is carried from
point to point in a perfectly straight line
across vaUeys and plains and over hills
without the slightest regard to the con
figuration of the ground, sometimes plung
ing down into abysses a thousand feet
deep. Ih'joks and smaller rivers are
bridged over by the wall, while on both
hanks <Tf larger streams strong flanking
towers are placed.
In a late interview, Senator Wallace
