Bill* Fi. ips W H sis isi gto it Let 11 1\ Correspcndcp.ce of tlie Rising Fawn Gazette.] Washington, D. C., Oct. 13, 187 J. There seems to be no end to senator Conkling’s misrepresentations, of the subject of government taxes. In bis Brooklyn speech on Wednesday might be said that New York alone paid one third of the government’s expenses. With equal truth, he might have said that the square in which the custom House in New York city is situated paid one tlCrd. The money is aCtuMy paid there. But it is not Now York that pays the money, but consumers through out the country. The money is paid in New York to be sure, but that is all. The substance of the r'Ccrnt Post office Department decision concerning lottery mails is that letters will not be forward ed which are addressed to a lottery com. pany. or to a pearsoft as manager or agent of a lottery company. The department dose not assume to stop letters addressed simply to individ uals, though such persons be known to tho Postmaster as the manager or agent of a lottery company. Our latest information from New York through itdible sources, is that the Democratic party is daily growing in strentli and that notwithstanding the Tammary de feelion, the democracy are canfidcnj of the re- election of Gov. Robinson and the entire State ticket by a handsome majority. His management of the fi nances of the Stale, while Comptroller and while in the Executive chair has been entirely successful, and done much in reducing taxation and the expenses of the State Govermment which under the many years of Republican misrule and profligate legislation, had become ex ceedingly oppressive to the tax payers of the stare, and has given him a strong hold on the people of the state, and more especially those of the interior sections of it, who will at this important juncture cast their ballot# regardless of party feeling, believing as they do that the best interests ofthe state requires at its head a man of Gov- Robinson, honesty and entegrity in preference to one who for yeare has been known to be identified with nearly all the corrupt schema for depleting the public treasury. Large numbers of the reflecting and thinking members of the republican paity who have the interest and welfare of the peo ple at heart, repudiate the nomination of Cornell and will cast their ballots for Robiesoh, who has been tried and fully answers the old jefiersonion requirement is he honest and is he capable . The number of honest and independent re pulicans who will suppoit Robinson, will to a large extent oh-set the uumbeis r\ ho will follow John Kelly. Benton. Savannah News:—A committee of Democratic ladies of Columbus, headed by the wife of Senator Thurman, have entered the campaign in Ohio, 'and offer a two hundred and fifty dollar baunei to the Democrats of that County which shall show the largest increased Dem ocratic vote over that cast at the last Presidential election. Gn some of the English horse rail roads they are experimenting with glass sleepers. These are made by a process patented by F. {Siemens, of Dresden. Unlike the dela Bastie glass, when bro ken, the Siemens’ product does not fiy into fragments. The sleepers are three feet long, four inches wide, fly six inches deep, and are molded to fit accurately iha rail.—Bearing plates are placed under the joints and the rails are attached to them. A sleeper resting on supports thirty inches apart breaks with a weight of five tons. Glass, un like pine, is practically indestructible by moisture, and is, of course, not se heavy as east iron. The glass sleepers Cost about the same as iron ones. Tlvo Milledgcvilte Union And Rocorcr says that the enlargement of the asylum for the colored insane, recently provided for by the legislature, is going steadlv forward under the direction of the con tractor, Major J* Fuss. One hundred and eighty rooms are to added to the buildings now* occupied by the male and colored patients—9o rooms to each budd ing. This work will require 1,500,000 brick. Forty five or fifty laborers are employed in this work, not including those who are tearing down the old pen itentiary and delivering the materia* on the ground. Mr. Keil, of Macon, who superintended the brick work oi the new hotel, has charge of tho bricklaying and is pushing the work while v-eat her is favorable, but cannot vsn-iue an opin ion as 'to when the buildings will be com pleted. . —— Columbus Ohio, Qct 18.—2:15 a. m. The chairman of the Re publican Comrrdaee claims the election of 23 out of 35 Seuators, and 70 out 114 Representatives. Des Moines, lowa, Oct- 14.—The day has been fine and pleasant throughout the State, and the contest for Governor in most localities is exciting and hard fought, with a full vote in almost every case. Nothing reliable from the State as a whole is yet known. The Russian Court invited Dr. Ayer and his family to the Archduke’s wed ding in the Royal Palace. This distinc tion was awarded him not only because fJ was an American, but also because his name as a physician had become fav orably known in Russia on its passage round the world* —Pueblo (Col.)
