Cinxcixxati, February 21.— The
Ohio river is now higher than it has
been since the great flood of 1847. At
11:30 it was 58 feet and 6 inches and
rising half an inch an hour. High
winds prevailed this morning accom
panied by colder weather with light
snow. This will check the rise, though
not at once as the river is still rising
rapidly above. The wind has had a
most injurious effect on the railroad
embankments in Mill Creek Valley by
the waves crumbling the banks.

Mr. Editor:
Our town is on a perfoct boon and some
body aug'at to wright it up. So if you will
allow me apaco I will give you a fow versos
from tho capitol of Dade.
Saturday evening while standing in front
of S & B’a store and feeling at peace with aP
mankind, we beheld a six footer approaching
with rapid strides, flourishing a Remington
pistol. No. 44 we gazed in rnuto surprise with
a small sensation of fear runing up and down
our back bone, and if we had not been so
unutterably tired of our lonely existence
don’t know but what we would have “Vam
moosed the Eanchs” but we found that he
was ono of tho guards in search of escaped
convicts from Colo City. Two had dug out
through an old unoccupied mine, but was dis
covered in the act aud persuit was soon in
utitutod, tho guards made faithful effort to
oapture them. One was afterwards captured,
near Valley Read and brought hero Tuesday
evening by Messrs Davenport and Smith.
Rev Mr. Morris preached a very intsiest
ing sormon? last Sunday in the Presbyterian
oliurch upon tho subject of “Truth and Love.”
A much needed discourse in our town - I
Sent mean to say that our good people ever
lie, but they speak extuavesantly you know
but as to loving any body some of them are
perfuot strangers to that sensation, unles you
exhibit a nickle and then, notice expanieg tf
the chest, the anxious giaro of the eye, and
tho throbing veins of the temple. Then it i3
that a flame of lovo is kindled in their cold
hearts - These hardley ever go to church
but oh 1 what a pity 'they missed that ser
mon.
Prof. Morris commences school next. Mon
day, and wo hope he may please tho fastedi
ous TrcHtohito and that all may move along
smothelv aud Trenton will have a good flour
ishing school - Tho Prof, says he has come
to stay amongst us and W3 hope ho may
have sufficient eueourgemet to do so. But
others in Jays gone by came to stay too, and
whore are they ? —all, ail gone, except one
and“he can’t go away fen - he hason’t mon
ey enough to pay his way on the train, and
he is pj crippled up with the £but, (caused ay
high living and good nursing) he caln’t walk
off. I hope this, will not offbnd tho os Prof
for I have always been a true friend of his
and this squib is only intended for fun.
Tho we<kly families of our city are all

Several Commercial tourist in town

Our Clerk of Court was on tbe train
