We regret to chronical the death of

his last. H<* had Lett st.fT ring fo'
Koine time with a lung affliction, and
although his friends could hardly look
for a complete recovery yet they hoped
that he could live through the summer.
He was a young man of extraordin
ary tniud, and but for his physicial
ailment would lnve taken a very hiuli
stand iu life. He was heard to ep'ak
often of his approaching death, an 1
was willing to meet it when it come.

sincere sympathy. He was buried at

A Visit lo Coal City
Having occasion to visit Coal City,
we, six in number, mounted our hoises
on the morning of the 20tli inst. and
pulled rein for sand mountain. After
a little consultation we appointed the
inimicable Wilburn O’Neal as our
guide over the mountain. Knowing
him to he a great hunter and woods
man we had the utmost confidence in
his ability to carry us over. Soon af
ter we commenced ascending the me un
tain, wo had to dismount and climb
up as Lest we could. My faith in our
guide began to weaken, as he had rep
resented it to be a good road, and I
commenced complaining,but alter some
reflection I concluded it was as good
as the law allowed. I mean the law of
gravitation. Soon we arrived at a
point where the mountain was inverted,
but by persisting in our efforts we found
ourselves at the top. While going up
the mouutain we could find occasionly
where there had been little fi-es, built
we supposed by our guide, turkey bunt
ing after night, but feeling a delicacy
in inquiring into other men’s business
we asked no questions. We again
mounted aud rode on without anything
of interest until within two miles of
Coal City, We fell in company with
a little boy riding a mule. His clothes
were not very good, and he was with
out shoes or socks, with his feet ex
posed to the cold cutting wind. We
inquired his name. He said it was Wil
lie Cox, the son of Mr. Cox, at Coal
City. At once my sympathy was
aroused. I don’t know when I have
felt such a tender interest iu any boy.
I hau read much of ihe trial and con
viction of Mr. Cox, and had a correct
knowledge of the social standing of
him and his family. And now to see
this little boy in his pratting innocence,
lingering around his convict father,
exposed to tho hardships of a convict
camp, away from the tender care of a
loving mother, and surrounded Ly in
fluences ani? scenes calculated to blunt
his tender sensibilities, was enough to
touch the most obdurate heart.
Arriving at Coal City, wo met with
Cox at the stables. He very kindly
took charge ot our horses. He is so
cial intelligent. S;vys he is kindly
treated and.appears terbe very hope-
M '**
vHjff the face is 'an index of the 'neartr,'
th6n Mr. Cox must be a high-toned gen
-1 tleman, but I suspect a little too much
game in his making for the good of
himself and family. It has been eharg-
ed by some political aspirants that
Cox was allowed too much lioerty.
That he mounted a mule and rode three
days after an escaped convict. That
is not true, and if it was I see nothing
improper in it. They have a right to
make him a trusty.
Why are so many of these convicts
chained and shackled? The answer is
to prevent them from escaping. Cox
has something stronger than chains to
bind him; his word of honor. In a
short time we found ourselves partak
ing a sumptuous dinner, and i at once
resolved to get even with Governor
Crown. Many years ago he presider
a* Judge of ur court, and unfortun
ately for me I was on a jury that could
not agice upon a verdict, and he kept
us two days and nights without a mor
sel to eat, now I am even w ith the
< ovcrnoi. I had fattened up so w hen
l ggt home niv wife thought I had the
dropsy. We considered the treatment
of the convicts good, with one excep*
tion. Under the law they arc senten
ced to the penitentiary to serve at hard
labor, This is right Evil doers must
suffer, but to place them where they are
Bible to be crushed by falling slate
tml rock, is doing them a gieat wrong,
and this wrong must be located some
wheve. I don’t reflect upon tbe man
ageis at Coal City, for I am satisfied
hey are my kind, careful and atten
tive. Rut Governor Brown is the
master wheel of mis concern. With
his millions, (and money is power,)
it moves fiie political machineiy of a
gnat Government, and enough of it
will brace tbe mountains, until the
most timid need not fear to venture.
Would it no: be better for him to ex
pend a few thousands n ope and make
it secure, tin n for one of thesa poor
unfortunates to suffer as they some
times do? Some mav think it unavoid
able. If so the leseo system should be
abandoned, and the #n\icts put in
the walls ol the penilentiav, w here the
mountains cannot fall it) on them.
And now 1 nv this, if 1 should he
guilty of nnv crime that would hang
me, or give me a life sentence in the
chain gang. I ask you, gentVnun of
