THE GAZETTE.
Thursday Morning, April 20, 1882.
Mr. J. >t. Sutton, of Chattanooga, Tenn.,
is (intboraed to receive and receipt for sub
scription and advertisements for the Ga*kitk.
Wheat never looked better.
Candidates are blossoming.
We have a sulky, a buggy, and a
wagon for sale.
Mr. G. W. Sherrock has opened a
blaeksmith shop at Trenton.
Harry Williams made a business
trip to Chattanooga last week.
Rev. C. D. McTeer will preach at
Byrd’s Chapel next Sunday at 11
o’clock.
Officer Holtzclaw was in town last
Saturday, collecting special tax from
tobacco and whisky dealers.
Rev. V. A. Bell will preach at the
Furnace on the second Sunday, and
Saturday before, iu each month.
Charles Smith, of Smith, Ga., is
teaching school at Cedar Grove church,
Walker county. Charley is compe
tent.
Married, at the residence of John
Wallace, by E. B. Ketcherside,
James N. Highfield to Miss Mary
Wallace.
Last Saturday was ?. lively day in
Rising Fawn. The Company paid
off, and a great many got a little two
much of the overjoyful.
We are glad to learn that our sheriff,
B. P. Majors, is improving. We hope
to see him out soon, for we believe be
has determined to get well.
About 100 hands passed through
town Monday night en route for Green
wood, Alabama, to load tan bark.
J. C. Smith was the boss, assisted by
G. W. Cuienton.
Mr. R. S. Leavctt wbo has applied
for the postoffice at this place was
down interviewing our people last
Saturday. He expects to get the office
by virtue of his Republicanism.
Our friend, Preston B. Smith, ol
Cedar Grove, son of Hon. J. F Smith,
has accepted a position with Flicks
Bros, as book-keeper. Press is a
young man c*t good mOlals, and hi
equal is hard to find.
Rev. T. C. Tucker will preach at
Anderson school bouse, near Trenton,
on the fifth Sunday, and Saturday
night before, in this month; at Wild
wood on the fifth Sunday night, and
at the Furnace on the next Tuesday
n'ght.
Mrs. Q. Z was at church last
Sunday in a beautiful cream colored
silk, liedecked with flakes of obi gold.
The bottom was set off in flounces
of bnff merino covered with pearl heads
How do you know she wasn’t? You
was not there.
Rev. Uavi 1 McCracken will preach
at this place on the third Sunday, and
Saturday before, in May, instead of
the second, as given out last Sunday.
Also at New Salem, on Lookout
Mountain, on the fifth Sunday, and
Saturday before, in this month.
We know of an old couple ovor the
way who can say more than a great
many people and tell the truth. They
have six children, all married, and all
living within two hundred yards of
their parents. All agree, and every
thing moves along like clock work.
Rising Fawn has a population of
about 800, we believe. If so, 783 of
our people either stayed at home or
sit around and whittled on dry goods
boxes, or at any rate they failed
to attend church last Sunday. It is
a shame to think that our people have
arrived at the point that they care not
for their God, themselves, nor their
children.
Do you want to see a letter of your
own writing in the Gazette? If so,
get your pen, ink and paper, and sit
down at your desk. W rite on only
one side of your paper, and write as
plainly as possible. Don’t make signs
and think the printer knows just ex
actly' what you want. Don’t make
any excuses, but pitch right tn and
write news, plain, brief, and to the
point. Sign a fictitious name if you
want to, but be sure to send your own
name along, so that we may know who
is responsible. Don’t write persona,
item* that wiH hurt any one’s feelings,
but write news. If you don’t know
any news, wait till next week beloii
you write.
Wildwood Letter.
While most of the people here are
lawabiding, peaceable, ha v d-working
citizens, we have a few bad characters
such as will break the windows •if the
church, and play cards near the church
on the Sabbath, and ve h ive a few
who tattle a little too much. J would
say to sac'll people, beware! You will
make money by tending to your own
business.
Some of our farmers ought to re
pair their fences, as it would tend to
keep down strife among neighbors, for
in as much as the keeping of bad com
pany will corrupt good morals, bad
fences will invariably make bad stock
The road strife travels is too narrow
for friendship, too crooked for love,
too rugged for honesty, and too hilly
for happiness.
I spent last Sunday with friends and
relatives on Lookout Mountain'. The
Sabbath schools are well attended.
It is a pleasant sight to see the young
folks take an interest in the Sabbath
school.
The people are planting corn with a
vengeance.
The past week has been pretty cool
for a poor man’s children.
’Squire McGill is sprucing round,
and I am almost inclined to think he
is a candidate for matrimony. He
makes us a good magistrate, and
a.ways tries to make peace between
his neighbors. Blessed arc the peace
makers.
There is some talk of a fishing
party next Saturday. If “R. Watson”
will come down, he will in reality
realize some of the like pleasures of
former days.
E. B. Ketcherside will preach for
us on the filth Sunday, and Saturday
night before, in this month.
Fitz Whacher.
A iVlorganvillexiift.
What has become M. Alichi and
John Box? Can’t you get them to
write some more? I hope 11. Watson
from this office will continue to write,
and in faet I wish you could get one
or two fjoin every office to write the
news.
R. A. Morgan is quite sick.
Mr. Isain Cole dial Sunday night
and was buried to day near his late
l-esidonoM Mr uf tiur
best citizens, and his death, though
not unexpected, has cast a gloom over
the entire community. I hear the far
mers complaining of rust on the wheat.
I fear the ciop will be cut short. I
learn that the paint oank on ’Squire
Acuff’s farm is doing better than was
expected. He lias red and yellow
paint, and it is said to be ot the finess
quality. The saw mill in Sligo hat
commenced to cut logs in earnest. Mr.
Asberry Richmond is kept busy in his
shop. He is one man this community
could not well spare. I hear some
little talk about candidates. I under
stand that Bill Jacoway wants to go
to the legislature. Well, I believe he
would make a good representative. 1
see ’Squire Renow’s card in the
Gazette. He is as clever as anybody, |
but—well, Mr. Editor r I won’t say it.
Well, yes, he ought not to run. I
understand he says he will carry Cole
City and Rising Fawn. Of course he
expects Senator Brown to use his in
fluence for him, but I don’t believe he
will do it, and I hope after the election
we will be convinced that he did not.
I believe that our settlement would be
willing to vote for A. O. Bacon for
Governor.
Success to your paper, and to you
in all of your undertakings.
Barb.
Don’t fail to read T. H. B. Cole’s
advertisement. When you go to Tren
ton, call on him. Also the advertise
ment of new shoe shop at Trenton.
Don’t go barefooted, when you can
get first-class work at low prices.
The closing exercises of Rising
Fawn Seminary will take place Friday
evening, May 6ih. Let everybody
come. The exercises promise to be
very interesting.
The Majors’ House will still be kept
open, so you know where to go when
you go to Trenton.
T. H. Robertson.
Mrs. Dr. Fricks who has been visit
ing relatives and friends in Chatta
nooga and Cartersville fqr some time
past, has returned home.
We will have a very good crop of
peaches this year.
Jiaki&ig Watches.
Defective watch eases are one of the
chief causes of so many watches not
being good time pieces. The cases
being thin and not fitting well, admit
dust and dirt to the movement, which
soon interferes with tlie running paits
of the watch, necessitating cleaning,
repairing, etc., and the amount thus
paid out, if applied toward buying a
good case iu the beginning, would
have saved this trouble and expense.
VN e have recently seen a case that
meets all these requirements, it having
been carried for over twenty years, and
still remains perfect. We refer to the
•las. Boss Patent Stiffened Gold
Case, which has become one of the
style articles of the jewelry trade,
possesaig as it does so many advan
tages over all other watch cases, being
made of two heavy plates of solid
gold, over a plate of composition, and
we advise all our readers to ask their
jeweler for a card or catalogue that
will explain the manner in which they
are made.
It is the only Stiffened Case made;
with two plates of gold, seamless
pendants, and center sol id joints, crown
pieces, etc., all of which are covered
by letters patent. Therefore, buy no
case before consulting a jeweler who
keeps the Jas. Boss Patent Stiffened
Gold Case, that you may learn the
difference between it aod all imitations
that claim to be equally as good.
For sale by all responsible jewelers.
Ask to see the warrant that accompa
nies each case, and don’t be puisuaded
that any other make of case is as
good. 9-12.
Query: Is the Rundaj School at
this place dead? Or *has it taken a
respite for a month? Something is
wrong, somewhere. Somebody, or it
would be bettor to say everybody, is to
blame, Three Sundays have passed
by now, and on two of those Sundays
a goodly number of children met at
the church and with their little
anxious faces for their superintendent
and teachers to meet them with their
smiling faces; but shame! not one of
the number was there. This is a
blushing shame, and if the parents of
this place live long enough, they will
regret the example they are setting be
fore thJ cu. me parent doe.s
not keep sacred the Sabbath, their
children certainly will not. Then do
something for the Sunday-school. If
it is not dead, it is very sick. Meet
and re-organize. Start out afresh,
and ‘‘do something for Jesus.”
