Thursday Morning, MatJ 4, 1882.
We are authorizeJ aril requested to
P nomine the name of MARTIN
B’INOW, Esq , ns a candidate tor tlie
House of Representative from Dade
comity.
I’OLI i'ICAL.
While a “county paper should be
used principally for dispensing county
news, stiU an occasional reference to
political questions is Loth interesting
and beneficial to a goodly number of
your readers. The year 1882 is to be
another in which our people are to be
come interested to a certain extent in
politics. The many phases and inci
dents which usually occur during
election years, are ever and anon put
ting on new colors and coming out
dressed in new styles. At present the
political outlook in our State seems to
be assuming rather an unusual posi
tion. At the earnest solicitation of
some person or poisons, lion. A. 11.
Stephens has consented for them to
use his name before the convention for
Governor. Who would have thought
that a man with such a National repu
tation as Mr. Stephens, would in his
old age, consent to become a candidate
for Governor, at the instance of those
whose greatest ambition is to rule or
ruin? W3 are clearly of the opinion
that those who are urging Stephens
as a candidate for Governor are none
other than Governor Colquitt and the
State House.click. And that for no
other purpose than to deieat the lion.
A. 0, Bacon because lie had manhood
enough to’oppose Governor Colquitt.
Let not the people be deceived. This
bringing out Mr. Stephens is to tuT
thar'tho ends ot Colquitt <to Cos., and
not for the good of the people, or to
the interests of' the great Democratic
party. We have already had enough
of Colquitt & Cos., let us get out of
their hands. We cannot be worsted.
We teel satisfied that Mr. Stephens
does not-desire to be Governor of the
State, and would not have consented
for his name to go beiore a convention
had be consulted bis own feelings and
not yielded to the influences btought
to bear upon him. It appears that
our most honored men cannot rise
high enough but that at sonic time,
and it may be without mature thought
stoop to serve “the Gods ”

did no other damage in that vicinity.

This is an age ot rapid book making.
We have the fact forcibly exemplified
in the announcement of a volume con
taining the bves of the James and the
Younger Brodiers, including an ex
haustive account of the recent success
ful methods of pursuit of the noted
robbers under the direction of Gov.
Crittenden, and the final culmination
of the tragedy of the killing ot Jesse
Janies in St. Joseph, Mo. As giving
interest to this narration, the profuse
ness of illustration is a noticeable
feature. Additional to the cuts illus
trating persons, scenes and incidents
in the 20 years career of outlawry,
are those from photographs of the per
sons and surroundings of the last
act of the drama. They include pic
tures of Jesse Janies oefore and aftei
death, his young wife and two child
ren, the mother and sister of the out
law, the murderers, Fords, and tin
house in which the deed was enacted
It includes also a well executed, full
page likeness of Gov. Crittenden, who
devised the means of breaking up .fid?
band, and relieved Missouri of the
he Bandit State.” It is
graphic statement and illustra-
lion of this sensational tragedy that \
terminates the long and wonderful
career of this noted The eu
tire history was written by Dr. Dacns
from facts given him by family and
friends of the outlaws, and attested
by final events. r £he repeated inter
views with the young wife strikingly
corroborated the thoroughness and ac
curacy of what had !*n previously
given in this volume. Asa record of
contemporaneous history it will excite
the interest and wonder ot every
reader—wonder that such a career of
bold, reckless, successful outlawry
could extend through a pciiod of 20
years before meeting with a tragic ter
mination,
As giving the social and domestic
.ife of an outlow’s family, it is of ab
sorbing interest.
It constitutes a page in American
history of startling character, and will
enlist the attention of the thoughtful
as well as the cursory reader.
The work is published for the sub
scription trade by D. N. Thompson A
