Nine of the leading independents
met in Atlanta last week, and recom
mended Hon, A. 11. Stephens fur Gov
ernor. The mass meeting that had
been called to meet there in June, was
stopped. This is the way the “dear
people” are represented in the inde
pendent party.
Our Dahlonega book agent met one
of his subscribers on the street the

the hook I sent you?” Jim —“Well,
yes, I got a book; but not the one I

that?” Jim—“ How’s that yourself?
I subscribed for Avery’s History of

Rev Felton, I), 1) , has telegraphed
Hon. Emory Speer that the Georgia
Independents have “recommended”
Hon. A. 11. Stephens for Governor
s ‘unanimiously and enthusiastically.”
When it is remembered that the con
vention or “conference” consisted of
only nine individuals, Rev. Felton’s
dispatch reads very much like an
emanation from the three tailors of
Tooley street, who icsolved that, “We,
the people of London,” etc.
Whiskey has paid ovei $300,000,-
000 to the Government in twenty
years. The consumption whisky,
in America is seventy-five million gal

factured is somewhat in advance of
this. It pays the Government evey
year between sixty and seventy million
dollars . This liquor costs the retail
dealer about $2.50 per ga lon which
makes $107,000,000 a year. They
sell at a profit of about double the cost.

pay about $350,000,000 a year for

Blaine and the South.
Certain Southern journals are mak
ing a hero of Mr. Blaine, and affect to
make him a martyr to the spite of his
enemies—particularly in the Chili-
Peru embroglio. To the South Mr.
Blaine should be no more than auy
other Radical who has figured on the
stage of American politics. When a
Representative he lioeled the Southern
people, and sought to gain a reputa
tion for stalwartness. In fact, he in
vented the term “stalwart.” lie has
no more regard for the South to-day
than he ever had, and it would take a
longer season of penace than his brief
stay in Garfield’s Cabinet to atone for
the mischief he wrought the Southern
people. lie signalized his entrance
into the Senate with a tirade worthy
of the stump, in which lie made
the most barefaced assertions as
to Sou*hern lawlessness, and has not
to this day done or said ought to show
that lie has grown wiser or more char
itable.
At the time that Arthur was mak
ing the best of his opportunities in
the New York custom house, Mr.
Blaine was posing before the country
as prosecutor of the South at the bar
of public opinion, and be was by no
means fastidious as to the tricks he
employed to prejudice the judgement
of the North. The South owes Blaine
nothing save a lively remembrance of
the efforts lie made for her detraction.
Colliding reviled her in the midst of a
heated campaign, Blaine slandered her
in the quiet of “off” years to figure as
ihe champion of the pet theories ol
Radicalism—Mr. Conkling’s welfare
is of little concern to her, and Blaine’s
should be of less.^
About all that Mr. Blaine has done
since he quitted the senate was to
threaten to make it warm for the
British lion in South America, an i,
no doubt, he would have given Uncle
Sam abundant employment hail not
President Arthur called a halt to his
precious policy. Mr Blaine may be
the leade.i of the alleged “conserva
tive” wing of the Radical party. But
as that party r lias done about all the
harm it well can do, and is just now
divided upon the question of who shall
enjoy the plunder, it is a matter of in
difference whether the stalwarts or the
conservatives rule the most; whichever
wing is in the ascendant, the well
tried machinery, pliant judges, servile
juries and unprincipled election bullies
will continue to discharge villain ser
vice tor their lords and masters. Mr.
Blaine overreached himself in the St: t •
Department, lie did it with his eyes
open and deserves no sympathy, least
of all from the people to viiiify whom
was once his pleasure and his cue. —
[Savannah News.
On the l ith, Emory Speer telegraph
ed to Dr. Felton: “1 hope the commit
tee of Independent Democrats who
meet to-dav will recommend Mr.
Stephens as ihe people’s candidate for
governor. I know positively that he
will not reject such a recommendation,
and that, if elected, lie wi 1 be the
governor of all the people, without re
gard to party. He will be controlled
by no ring.”

Detective watch cases are one of tin
chief causes of so many watches noi
being good time pieces. The cases
being thin and not fitting well, admit
dust ami dirt 10 tl, ,

soon interferes with the running putts
\jk‘ watch, necessitating cleaning,
etc., and the amount thus
paid out, if applied toward buying a
good case in the beginning, would
have saved this trouble and expense.
We have tecently seen a case that
meets all these requirements, it having
been carried for over twenty years, and
still remains perfect. We refer to the
Jas. Boss Patent Stiffened Gold
Case, which has become one of the
style articles of o]\e jewelry tiade,
possessig as it does so many advan
tages over all other watch cases, being
made of two heavy plates of solid
gold, over a plate of composition, and
we advise all our readers t*-*sk tlieii
jeweler for a card or catalogue that
will explain the manner in which they
arc made.
It is the only Stiffened Case made
with two plates of gold, seamless
pendants, and center solid joints, crown
pieces, etc., all of which are covered
by letters patent. Therefore, buy no
case before consulting a jeweler who
keeps the Jas. Boss Patent Stiffened
Gold Case, that you may learn the
difference between it and all imitations
that claim to he equally as good.
